Wade is overturned,\u201d McMullin wrote in a statement wherein he described himself a \u201cpro-life Utahn,\u201d \u201csome states will immediately enact extreme laws \u2013 such as total bans on abortion, onerous limits on birth control, and criminalization of women in desperate situations.\u201d Offering few specifics, McMullin said he \u201coppose[d] such laws.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2022\/us\/abortion-bans-restrictons-roe-v-wade.html\">According<\/a> to The New York Times, 13 states have \u201ctrigger laws\u201d that would implement abortion bans upon a Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will advocate for sensible legislation that improves support for women, children and families, safeguards access to health care, and establishes reasonable standards that prevent extremists from doing harm,\u201d McMullin added.<\/p>\n<p>McMullin\u2019s campaign website offers no clues to why he describes himself \u201cpro-life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The denunciation of returning state-level authority over abortion laws marks a sharp reversal from where McMullin stood on the 1973 landmark case six years ago when he mounted an independent presidential bid to thwart Donald Trump.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy can\u2019t [Donald Trump] actually say the words \u201cI want Roe v. Wade overturned?\u201d McMullin wrote on Twitter the night of the third debate between Trump and Hillary Clinton. \u201cI\u2019m the only pro-life candidate in the race.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><\/figure>\n<p>Trump would later carve out a new standard for what it means to be a pro-life president over the course of his one term in office, becoming the <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2020\/01\/24\/trump-sets-new-standard-for-pro-life-presidents-in-address-to-march-for-life\/\">first to personally attend<\/a> the annual March for Life in Washington D.C.<\/p>\n<p>If the Supreme Court overturns the nearly five-decade precedent of Roe v. Wade this summer, the decision would mark another signature accomplishment from Trump\u2019s tenure where three successful nominations to the high bench culminated in a 6-3 conservative majority. McMullin, on the other hand, an instrument of Democrats and Lincoln Project Republicans to oust reliably conservative incumbent Sen. Mike Lee, is now deriding the termination of Roe v.
