Similar laws have been passed in other states, but they have been ensnared in legal challenges, <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/sc-governor-signs-abortion-ban-2cd9e039d63fb071427db688d7ef8f05\">according<\/a> to the Associated Press.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cImportant health care decisions should be made by individuals in consultation with their trusted medical providers and their families, not politicians. Abortion is a critical component of comprehensive reproductive health care, and everyone deserves to have access to the health care they need, without politicians controlling when, how, or why,\u201d said Dr. Katherine Farris, Chief Medical Officer for Planned Parenthood South Atlantic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Planned Parenthood has also called the South Carolina law\u2019s restrictions \u201cabsurd.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">As South Carolina\u2019s governor signed into law an unconstitutional abortion ban, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PPFA?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@PPFA<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ReproRights?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@ReproRights<\/a> sued immediately to prevent this absurd restriction on health care \u2014 in the middle of a pandemic \u2014 from taking effect. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/NIwEF98TbP\">https:\/\/t.co\/NIwEF98TbP<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Planned Parenthood Action (@PPact) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PPact\/status\/1362513754995449857?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 18, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>A federal courthouse will hold a hearing Friday on whether the new restrictions can stay in place amidst the challenge to the law, which South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson plans to \u201cvigorously defend\u201d in court. \u201cMy office will vigorously defend this law in court because there is nothing more important than protecting life,\u201d said Wilson in a statement Thursday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The law doesn\u2019t apply to abortion for other circumstances, such as for rape and incest, if the life of the mother is in danger, or if the child would not be viable outside the womb because of a fetal abnormality, and as such, those abortions can continue in the state,<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.postandcourier.com\/politics\/sc-governor-signs-bill-banning-most-abortions-federal-lawsuit-scheduled-for-hearing\/article_5dc7a154-71f4-11eb-9066-cb757d1490d5.html\"><span>reports<\/span><\/a> <span>The Post and Courier. South Carolina has three abortion clinics, all of which are operated by either Planned Parenthood or the Greenville Women\u2019s Clinic, the plaintiffs in the case.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>McMaster has also vowed to defend the law against challenges:<\/span> <span>\u201cToday, we made history.
