The Harvard study analyzes the effects of &#8220;pre-intervention&#8221; reparations\u2014or payments if they had existed before the coronavirus pandemic\u2014on COVID-19 contact rates and transmission of the virus.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Dr. Michelle Morse\u2014one of the Harvard Medical School assistant professors who led the study\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecrimson.com\/article\/2021\/2\/16\/hms-reparations-impact-on-infections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.thecrimson.com\/article\/2021\/2\/16\/hms-reparations-impact-on-infections\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1613765643157000&amp;usg=AFQjCNELIhbAYvLQJ2lt_zUSZSpfp9CvYA\">told<\/a>&nbsp;the Harvard Crimson that reparations &#8220;could have been as effective&#8221; at combating the coronavirus in African-American communities as a vaccine.&nbsp;Duke University professor William Darity, an economist and <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextsystem.org\/for-reparations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/thenextsystem.org\/for-reparations&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1613765643157000&amp;usg=AFQjCNH1FYmzdAsY1hCNS6tHUaq2Is2CdA\">reparations<\/a> advocate who co-authored the Harvard study, recently estimated that such payments would <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2020\/08\/12\/slavery-reparations-cost-us-government-10-to-12-trillion.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cost<\/a>&nbsp;up to $12 trillion.<\/p>\n<div class=\"posts-content__category-widget md:hidden -ml-4 -mr-4 my-8 px-4 py-6 bg-gray-100\">\n<h4 class=\"mt-0 text-red-600 font-medium font-sans uppercase\">Recent Stories in Coronavirus<\/h4>\n<ul class=\"list-none p-0\">\n<li class><a class=\"text-black block mb-3 pb-3 border-b border-white\" href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/coronavirus\/harvard-docs-prescribe-trillions-of-dollars-of-reparations-for-covid\/\"><strong>Harvard Docs Say Trillions in Reparations Needed to Address COVID<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<li class><a class=\"text-black block mb-3 pb-3 border-b border-white\" href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/coronavirus\/cdc-teachers-can-go-back-to-school-without-vaccine\/\"><strong>CDC: Teachers Can Go Back to School Without Vaccine<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<li class><a class=\"text-black block mb-3 pb-3 border-b border-white\" href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/coronavirus\/dems-join-push-to-strip-cuomos-emergency-powers\/\"><strong>Dems Join Push to Strip Cuomo&#8217;s Emergency Powers<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The Harvard team&#8217;s research was conducted as part of the Lancet Commission on Reparations and Redistributive Justice, which is expected to release a full report on worldwide reparations this summer.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The study was published days before the House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights, and Civil Liberties held a hearing on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/116th-congress\/house-bill\/40\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/116th-congress\/house-bill\/40&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1613765643157000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFiWKeBCkzZCZLbH2IqUHJuuZbuKA\">H.R. 40<\/a>, a bill that would establish a reparations task force to study the lasting effects of slavery and segregation and &#8220;recommend appropriate remedies.&#8221;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/ginaheeb\/2021\/02\/17\/democrats-push-for-reparations-bill-testing-white-house-support\/?sh=21f9685a3c9d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/ginaheeb\/2021\/02\/17\/democrats-push-for-reparations-bill-testing-white-house-support\/?sh%3D21f9685a3c9d&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1613765643157000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFx1oDvzE9Cidw1bXRgQ4Whc4kOaA\">More<\/a> than 170 Democrats have cosponsored the bill, which has gained traction since Democrats took control of Congress in January.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The Harvard researchers picked Louisiana\u2014which has one of the highest income distribution inequality rates in the country\u2014to represent racial disparities across the United States. The scientists compared rates of coronavirus transmission in the Bayou State with those in South Korea and hypothesized that rates of coronavirus transmission among black Louisianans would have been lower if reparations had already been in place. The study also notes that &#8220;wealth redistribution would decrease the ability of affluent whites to cloister themselves in a setting of relative exclusivity.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Reparations would have reduced overcrowded housing within the black community and provided black Americans with more access to personal protective equipment. Payments would also have kept black Americans from being forced to take jobs as frontline workers, the study said.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"m_-1493092344424204294gmail-docs-internal-guid-f9548b25-7fff-eed0-b136-639d4ce58c96\">The White House on Wednesday said President Joe Biden would <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-usa-biden-slavery\/white-house-says-biden-supports-study-of-slavery-reparations-idUSKBN2AH2K9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-usa-biden-slavery\/white-house-says-biden-supports-study-of-slavery-reparations-idUSKBN2AH2K9&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1613765643157000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFORBoQWyv5Cw2vx-os2K3aqgo6CA\">support<\/a> creating a commission to study reparations. Last fall, Biden <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/2020-election\/biden-taps-reparations-advocate-for-treasury-transition\/\">tapped<\/a> reparations advocate Mehrsa Baradaran to work on his Treasury Department transition team.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Some localities have already taken steps to institute reparations: Asheville, N.C.,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/07\/16\/us\/reparations-asheville-nc.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/07\/16\/us\/reparations-asheville-nc.html&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1613765643157000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHt3b32JSLhAtFOTU77W20iopr8Pw\">passed<\/a> one form of reparations that would help boost home ownership and career opportunities for black citizens in July.
