An expert in European fairy tales debunked the viral claim.<\/p>\n<p><span><strong>Fact Check:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Facebook <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo.php?fbid=10209989437409114&#038;set=a.1450583081165&#038;type=3&#038;theater\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">post<\/a> appears to show a vintage photo of a man with a dark-skinned puppet on his shoulder. \u201cI was today years old when i learned\u2026.Geppeto was actually a slave master and he made his puppets from slave skin and hair,\u201d reads the post. \u201cPinocchio was an actually posssed (sic) doll made from slave skin and hair and he was actually seen walking around without geppeti (sic) and no one knows where the puppet is located today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There is no evidence to suggest this claim is correct. Geppetto, the creator of Pinocchio in the classic fairy tale, is described as a poor woodworker who carved Pinocchio out of \u201ca piece of enchanted wood,\u201d according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/topic\/The-Adventures-of-Pinocchio#ref1261150\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Britannica<\/a>. Though the original story of Pinocchio, written in 1883 by Italian Carlo Collodi, involves more mature elements than were depicted in Disney\u2019s 1940 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0032910\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">musical adaption<\/a> of the story, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/film\/2020\/feb\/23\/pinocchio-review-wooden-puppet-fairytale-goes-back-to-the-sweet-sour-original\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Guardian<\/a>, there is no evidence to suggest the original story involved slavery.<\/p>\n<p>Check Your Fact found no credible news reports about any alleged connection between the fairy tale and slavery. A 2011 NBC News article titled, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/id\/wbna43684424\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pinocchio\u2019s Real Roots Mapped<\/a>\u201d makes no mention of slavery. There is likewise no mention of slavey in a translated version of the 1883 book \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/fathom.lib.uchicago.edu\/2\/72810000\/72810000_pinocchio.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Adventures of Pinocchio<\/a>.\u201d <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2021\/09\/22\/fact-check-walt-disney-body-thawed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Is Walt Disney\u2019s Frozen Body Set To Be Thawed In 2021?)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have never heard such a thing,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/cas\/rll\/profiles\/cristina_mazzoni\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cristina Mazzoni<\/a>, a professor at the University of Vermont with expertise in European fairy tales, in an email to Check Your Fact. \u201cWhile it is true that in the original Italian book Geppetto made his puppet with the intention of exploiting him in street performances, <span class=\"il\">Pinocchio<\/span> was made entirely out of a single piece of wood.
