Shelley Moore Capito grilled Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Sec. Alejandro Mayorkas on Wednesday about the border crisis. Specifically, she pressed him on whether claims the administration is controlling the border sufficiently would count as \u201cdisinformation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mayorkas, appearing before the Senate Committee on Appropriations, was asked whether his claims about the border being under control would count as \u201cdisinformation\u201d under the department\u2019s new <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/05\/04\/alejandro-mayorkas-unaware-nina-jankowicz-tiktok-videos-misinformation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Disinformation Governance Board<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think, quite honestly, for the good of the rest of the department, that now is a good time to abandon this ludicrous and much maligned idea. I wonder, when you say that we have operational control of the border, is that definitionally disinformation?\u201d Capito <a href=\"https:\/\/www.appropriations.senate.gov\/hearings\/a-review-of-the-presidents-fiscal-year-2023-funding-request-for-the-us-department-of-homeland-security\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">asked<\/a>. \u201cBecause, from a lot of our perspectives, we don\u2019t believe that is true.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo it seems such a subjective and undefined, what disinformation is. I would challenge you to punt this and rethink \u2026 to make sure that the American people really understand what\u2019s going on here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe work [of the board] is so very important in achieving a mission in a way that does not infringe on free speech, on civil rights and civil liberties, on right of privacy, our work in this department in addressing disinformation that threatens security of the homeland has been going on for almost 10 years,\u201d Mayorkas responded. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/05\/01\/mayorkas-disinformation-board-infringe-free-speech\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Mayorkas Says Disinformation Board Will Not \u2018Infringe On Free Speech\u2019)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/05\/03\/mayorkas-congress-dhs-mayorkas-jankowicz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mayorkas<\/a> then explained the department put together a working group to ensure there are \u201cguardrails\u201d in place to protect free speech and other civil liberties of Americans.<\/p>\n<p>Mayorkas <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/04\/27\/mayorkas-operational-control-border-lifting-title-42-katko\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">recently testified<\/a> that the DHS will still maintain control of the border amid the expected tidal wave of migrants following the end of Title 42.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is our responsibility to maintain operational control of the border,\u201d Mayorkas testified. \u201cThat is what our personnel are dedicated to doing. That is what the personnel throughout the department and I as a secretary are dedicated in doing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will not lose operational control at the border.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mayorkas also <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/04\/27\/alejandro-mayorkas-biden-administration-effectively-managed-border-crisis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">claimed<\/a> the Biden Administration has \u201ceffectively managed\u201d the <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/04\/28\/chip-roy-rips-secretary-alejandro-mayorkas-biden-administration-immigration-policy-house-judiciary-committee\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">border crisis<\/a>. Agents arrested <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/04\/19\/border-patrol-migrants-cbp-title-42\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">209,906<\/a> people in March alone at the border, the highest since March of 2000. Authorities <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/01\/25\/customs-border-protection-illiegal-immigration-2-million-december\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">encountered<\/a> a record two million migrants in 2021.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Republican West Virginia Sen.
