Hughes was the defense team\u2019s first witness and her testimony continued Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are indications, as I\u2019ve mentioned before, of the sexual assault and the sexual abuse, and how he would, when he was angry and when he was drunk \u2014 it was mostly drug- and alcohol-fueled rage when he would throw her on the bed and try to have sex with her,\u201d said Hughes. \u201cThen, you know, if he was not able to perform, he would get more angry at her and blame her. (Photo by JIM LO SCALZO\/POOL\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Hughes, testifying based on notes from Heard\u2019s therapist, said Heard told her Depp once penetrated her with a liquor bottle and digitally penetrated her on multiple occasions. She also described a disturbing allegation that Depp once accused Heard of flirting with another man and hiding drugs on her body.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. Depp performed a \u2018cavity search\u2019 and ostensibly was looking for drugs and felt it acceptable to rip off her nightgown and stick his fingers up her vagina to look for cocaine and thought maybe she was hiding it there,\u201d said Hughes.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The bombshell claim came in a Fairfax, Virginia, courtroom where Depp, 58, is suing\u00a0Heard, 36, for $50 million for accusing him of beating her in\u00a0a\u00a0<a class=\"external-link\" title=\"(opens new window)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/ive-seen-how-institutions-protect-men-accused-of-abuse-heres-what-we-can-do\/2018\/12\/18\/71fd876a-02ed-11e9-b5df-5d3874f1ac36_story.html?noredirect=on\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" aria-describedby=\"external-disclaimer\">2018 op-ed<\/a>\u00a0she wrote for <em>The<\/em>\u00a0<em>Washington Post<\/em>\u00a0about surviving domestic violence.\u00a0Depp\u2019s legal team sued in Virginia because The Washington Post is printed there.<\/p>\n<p>Heard has counter-sued for $100 million, accusing Depp of smearing her by calling her a liar. The current trial is expected to last into May.<\/p>\n<p>Hughes said Heard\u2019s therapists feared for her safety, and related to her that the actress sometimes \u201cfought back.\u201d She also testified that Heard acknowledged sometimes reacting to Depp\u2019s alleged abuse with \u201cviolence\u201d and psychological aggression, saying Heard was\u201dvery ashamed and remorseful about that.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"paragraph\">\n<p>Hughes\u2019 testimony was used to dispute that of a psychologist called by Depp\u2019s team last week, who said Heard showed no signs of post-traumatic stress disorder.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph\">\n<p>Depp has insisted that he never struck Heard. After Heard\u2019s\u00a0attorney Ben Rottenborn accused the \u201cPirates of the Caribbean\u201d star of abusing his wife of two years,\u00a0a spokesperson for Depp called the claim false and an attempt by Heard to \u201cexploit a serious social movement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The televised trial, pitting one of Hollywood\u2019s biggest stars of the past half century against his ex-wife, has exposed lurid details of their tempestuous relationship. It\u2019s theme of domestic abuse comes after Hollywood was rocked by several \u201cMe-Too\u201d scandals, involving powerful men allegedly abusing women.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rasmussenreports.com\/public_content\/lifestyle\/questions\/april_2022\/questions_depp_v_heard_april_24_25_2022\">recent poll<\/a> showed that of Americans who are following the trial closely, most side with Depp.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone and online survey finds that 40% of American Adults believe, based on what they know about the case involving accusations of domestic abuse, that Depp is probably telling the truth,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rasmussenreports.com\/public_content\/lifestyle\/entertainment\/april_2022\/more_americans_believe_johnny_depp\">Rasmussen reported<\/a>. \u201cJust 10% think Heard is probably telling the truth.
