Wade\u00a0<\/em>after a draft opinion was leaked indicating that the Court is poised to overturn the landmark ruling that enshrined abortion as a right under federal law.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to reporters in the halls of the Capitol building Tuesday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=97ga-HOwcl0\">Murkowski<\/a> condemned the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/breaking-supreme-court-strikes-down-roe-v-wade-decision-in-draft-of-majority-opinion-report-says\">leak of the draft opinion<\/a>, before commenting that the decision itself \u201crocks\u201d her confidence in the Court. \u201cThe leak is absolutely reprehensible, and needs to be condemned in the strongest possible terms,\u201d Murkowski said. \u201cI really find it shocking that this would happen. I understand it is unprecedented. Second point is, <i>Roe<\/i> is still the law of the land, we don\u2019t know the direction that this decision will ultimately take, but if it goes in the direction that this leaked copy has indicated, I will just tell you that it rocks my confidence in the court right now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Murkowski also told reporters, via The Hill, that she spoke with several justices, whom she did not name, during their confirmation processes. She said the justices told her that they viewed\u00a0<em>Roe <\/em>as settled law and gave her the impression that they would not vote to overturn it. \u201cI think there were some representations made with regards to precedent and settled [law],\u201d she said. \u201cComments were made to me and to others about <i>Roe<\/i> being settled and precedent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Collins issued a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.collins.senate.gov\/newsroom\/senator-collins-statement-on-leaked-dobbs-v-jackson-womens-health-organization-draft-decision\">statement<\/a> Tuesday saying that the opinion, if it is actually the final ruling of the Court in the case of\u00a0<em>Dobbs v. Jackson Women\u2019s Health Organization<\/em>, would be \u201cinconsistent\u201d with the conversations she had with Justices Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh during their confirmation processes.\u00a0\u201cIf this leaked draft opinion is the final decision and this reporting is accurate, it would be completely inconsistent with what Justice Gorsuch and Justice Kavanaugh said in their hearings and in our meetings in my office. Obviously, we won\u2019t know each Justice\u2019s decision and reasoning until the Supreme Court officially announces its opinion in this case.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Asked by reporters whether, in response to the leaked opinion, she felt misled by Gorsuch and Kavanaugh, Collins evaded the question, saying that her \u201cstatement speaks for itself,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/news\/3475255-collins-draft-roe-decision-completely-inconsistent-with-what-gorsuch-kavanaugh-told-me\/\">The Hill<\/a> reported. In addition, Collins Communications Director Annie Clark responded to questions about her stance on the Senate filibuster, telling Punchbowl News\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JakeSherman\/status\/1521511817591283713\">Jake Sherman<\/a> that \u201cSenator Collins\u2019 position on the filibuster is unchanged.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Murkowski also told reporters that she was open to considering legislation that would codify\u00a0<em>Roe\u00a0<\/em>into law, noting that she and Collins had introduced a similar bill in February. \u201cI thought it made sense then and I think it makes perhaps more sense now,\u201d Murkowski said. But The Hill noted that both senators voted against the Women\u2019s Health Protection Act, which would have codified the decision.<\/p>\n<p>A draft opinion in the case of\u00a0<em>Dobbs. v. Jackson Women\u2019s Health Organization\u00a0<\/em>was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/breaking-supreme-court-strikes-down-roe-v-wade-decision-in-draft-of-majority-opinion-report-says\">leaked<\/a> to Politico Monday night. The draft opinion \u201cis a full-throated, unflinching repudiation of the 1973 decision which guaranteed federal constitutional protections of abortion rights and a subsequent 1992 decision \u2013\u00a0<i>Planned Parenthood v.
