Wade.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Both Manchin and Sinema defended the filibuster Tuesday, saying that they believe the filibuster has actually protected abortion rights from being overturned by Congress in the past.<\/p>\n<p>Buzzfeed News D.C. Bureau reporter <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/pdmcleod\/status\/1521518683243352064\">Paul McLeod<\/a> first reported Tuesday that Manchin did not support ending the filibuster to codify <em>Roe v. Wade<\/em> into federal law. \u201cBig: Senator Joe Manchin just indicated he would not blow up the filibuster to codify <em>Roe<\/em>, saying he believes the filibuster is a check on power that preserves abortion rights. Without Manchin, the chance of passing <i>Roe<\/i> into law is pretty much zero,\u201d McLeod tweeted.<\/p>\n<p>CBS News Congressional Correspondent <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MacFarlaneNews\/status\/1521529042738065410\">Scott MacFarlane<\/a> quoted Manchin directly. \u201cThe filibuster is the only protection we have of democracy right now,\u201d he reportedly said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve protected women\u2019s rights with the filibuster,\u201d Manchin added, as reported by <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/news\/senate\/3475593-manchin-defends-filibuster-amid-calls-to-codify-abortion-rights\/\">The Hill<\/a>. Manchin repeatedly refused to answer questions on the opinion itself, The Hill added.<\/p>\n<p>CNN\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mkraju\/status\/1521314973166800897\">Manu Raju<\/a> reported that Manchin joined Senate Republicans in February to block the passage of the Women\u2019s Health Protection Act, which would have codified <em>Roe.\u00a0<\/em>The bill was defeated by a vote of 46-48, and the Senate would have needed 60 votes to pass.<\/p>\n<p>Sinema issued a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SenatorSinema\/status\/1521513259299389441\">statement<\/a> to her Twitter account echoing Manchin\u2019s sentiments. \u201cA woman\u2019s health care choices should be between her, her family, and her doctor,\u201d she wrote. \u201cOverturning <i>Roe v. Wade<\/i> endangers the health and wellbeing of women in Arizona and across America.\u00a0Protections in the Senate safeguarding against the erosion of women\u2019s access to health care have been used half-a-dozen times in the past ten years, and are more important now than ever. Throughout my time in Congress, I\u2019ve always supported women\u2019s access to health care, I\u2019m a cosponsor of the Women\u2019s Health Protection Act, and I\u2019ll continue working with anyone to protect women\u2019s ability to make decisions about their futures.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Manchin and Sinema\u2019s comments come amid a flurry of calls from far-Left Democrats who are seeking to take radical actions to codify <em>Roe v. Wade\u00a0<\/em>into law.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCongress must pass legislation that codifies <em>Roe v. Wade<\/em> as the law of the land in this country NOW,\u201d Vermont Senator <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BernieSanders\/status\/1521308813059444736\">Bernie Sanders<\/a> tweeted in response to the leaked draft opinion. \u201cAnd if there aren\u2019t 60 votes in the Senate to do it, and there are not, we must end the filibuster to pass it with 50 votes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Democratic Massachusetts Senator <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SenMarkey\/status\/1521304604625059841\">Ed Markey<\/a> called for the Senate to pack the Court Monday night. \u201cA stolen, illegitimate, and far-right Supreme Court majority appears set to destroy the right to abortion, an essential right which protects the health, safety, and freedom of millions of Americans,\u201d Markey tweeted. \u201cThere is no other recourse. We must expand the court.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEnd the filibuster. Codify #RoeVWade with a national law protecting abortion rights. Expand the Supreme Court.
