Wade<\/span><\/i><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In a draft majority opinion leaked to\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2022\/05\/02\/supreme-court-abortion-draft-opinion-00029473\"><span>Politico<\/span><\/a><span> on Monday night, Justice Samuel Alito writes that \u201c<i>Roe<\/i> was egregiously wrong from the start\u201d and \u201cwe hold that <i>Roe<\/i> and <i>Casey<\/i> must be overruled.\u201d According to Politico, the draft is \u201ca full-throated, unflinching repudiation of the 1973 decision which guaranteed federal constitutional protections of abortion rights and a subsequent 1992 decision \u2014 <\/span><i><span>Planned Parenthood v. Casey<\/span><\/i><span> \u2014 that largely maintained the right.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Barack and Michelle Obama released a statement on Tuesday condemning the Supreme Court\u2019s tentative decision.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cToday, millions of Americans woke up fearing that their essential freedoms under the Constitution were at risk,\u201d the couple said. \u201cIf the Supreme Court ultimately decides to overturn the landmark case of <\/span><i><span>Roe v. Wade<\/span><\/i><span>, then it will not only reverse nearly 50 years of precedent \u2014 it will relegate the most intensely personal decision someone can make to the whims of politicians and ideologues.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Obama releases a 719 word statement reacting to the leak of the draft court opinion on Roe v. Wade <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/1jfbLrLG3Y\">pic.twitter.com\/1jfbLrLG3Y<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Charlie Spiering (@charliespiering) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/charliespiering\/status\/1521572613516152832?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 3, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>The statement claims that \u201cfew, if any, women make the decision to terminate a pregnancy casually\u201d and pushes the initial reasoning for <\/span><i><span>Roe <\/span><\/i><span>\u2014 that the Fourteenth Amendment \u201crequires all of us to enjoy a sphere of our lives that isn\u2019t subject to meddling from the state.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In the Obamas\u2019 view, this includes \u201cwho we sleep with, who we marry, whether or not to use contraception, and whether or not to bear children.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>During his tenure in the White House, Obama was an ardent supporter of abortion. In the first days of his presidency, Obama <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/obamawhitehouse.archives.gov\/the-press-office\/statement-president-barack-obama-rescinding-mexico-city-policy\"><span>revoked<\/span><\/a><span> the Mexico City Policy \u2014 which forbids the United States from funding abortion overseas \u2014 to \u201crestore critical efforts to protect and empower women and promote global economic development.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe consequences of this decision would be a blow not just to women, but to all of us who believe that in a free society, there are limits to how much the government can encroach on our personal lives,\u201d the Obamas\u2019 statement continued. \u201cInstead, as we\u2019ve already begun to see in states with restrictive abortion laws, those women with means would travel to states where abortion remains legal and safe. Meanwhile, those without enough money or access to transportation or ability to take off from school or work would face the same circumstances most women faced before <\/span><i><span>Roe<\/span><\/i><span>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWe ask you to think about the college student waking up after her date forced her into unprotected sex,\u201d the statement added. \u201cThink about the couple that tried to have children for years, who are without any options when faced with the tragic reality of an unviable pregnancy.
