Since many expect him to run for president in 2024, that means the clock is likely ticking.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">For gun rights advocates, such a move would be a huge win.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">Yet, unsurprisingly, some people are <span class=\"s1\">less than thrilled by the promise<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">Jacksonville, Florida\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.news4jax.com\/news\/florida\/2022\/04\/29\/gov-ron-desantis-expects-constitutional-carry-in-florida\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"stylish-link\">News 4<\/a> reported last week that \u201cSome Floridians are gun-shy about the idea \u2014 including Z. Farhat, who manages firearm sales at Green Acres Sporting Goods. He says firearms are powerful tools and anyone who owns or uses them should undergo training, particularly, if that person is carrying a weapon in public.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">\u201cI feel like if you\u2019re going to carry a gun on you, you should have to go through some kind of training and safety course, you know, I think anybody that even buying purchasing a firearm needs to educate themselves on proper firearm safety,\u201d Farhat said. \u201cGuns are not toys, they\u2019re tools, and they should be respected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">No, firearms aren\u2019t toys. On that point, I agree completely.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">Let\u2019s be charitable and assume that Farhat only wants mandatory training prior to getting a permit and <i>not<\/i> before being allowed to buy a gun at all. It\u2019s possible that he\u2019s trying to say he just thinks training before buying a gun is a good idea.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">If so, he\u2019s not wrong. If not, well, then he is.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">Regardless, though, this is about constitutional carry, so let\u2019s focus on that side of his argument, that he believes training should be required prior to anyone being able to carry a firearm.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">It sounds reasonable to many. However, there\u2019s really not a lot of evidence that it actually makes anyone safer. Studies have shown that people with concealed carry permits <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heraldnet.com\/opinion\/concealed-carry-permit-holdres-are-law-abiding\/\" class=\"stylish-link\"><span class=\"s1\">are extremely law-abiding<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">While this might appear to back Farhat\u2019s assertion, the truth is that the study also looked at states with no training requirement. Despite that, the numbers don\u2019t really change.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">Meanwhile, people with training sometimes don\u2019t act upon that training. Take <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/florida-man-who-shot-unarmed-man-parking-space-dispute-sentenced-n1064626\" class=\"stylish-link\"><span class=\"s1\">the case in Clearwater, Florida<\/span><\/a> where a concealed carry permit holder shot and killed another man over a parking spot. While it\u2019s an anomaly among those with carry permits, it\u2019s safe to say his training class didn\u2019t tell him it was alright to kill someone when there was no threat to one\u2019s life.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">Training doesn\u2019t mean people retain it and the lack of a training requirement doesn\u2019t mean people don\u2019t get it. In Texas, after they passed constitutional carry, <a href=\"https:\/\/bearingarms.com\/camedwards\/2021\/10\/01\/interest-in-gun-training-soars-after-constitutional-carry-takes-effect-n50476\" class=\"stylish-link\"><span class=\"s1\">training enrollment went up<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">So, it\u2019s not difficult to believe that there\u2019s any reason a training requirement actually does anything.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">Yet Farhat wasn\u2019t the only one who has concerns.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">\u201cIt would make me uneasy,\u201d said Jacksonville resident Tom Minitte to News 4. \u201cThere\u2019s enough violence right now, so why do something that will have more people carrying guns?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">Well, maybe because the people who are the problem are already carrying them?<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">See, constitutional carry doesn\u2019t actually help criminals. Some claim it does, but convicted felons still can\u2019t lawfully carry a firearm. They can\u2019t even own one.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">The only people who benefit from constitutional carry are the law-abiding. That means that you\u2019re unlikely to see more violence result from ending permitting. Especially as it\u2019s been the law for ages in places like Utah and New Hampshire, both of which are <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_U.S._states_and_territories_by_violent_crime_rate\" class=\"stylish-link\"><span class=\"s1\">on the lower end<\/span><\/a> of violent crime rates in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>Jax 4 reported, \u201cKatie Hathaway is from Mom\u2019s Demand Action, which is a movement of Americans fighting for public safety measures that can protect people from gun violence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">\u201cThis is a huge threat to public safety, not only Floridians, but also tourists and visitors and especially law enforcement officers,\u201d Hathaway told the news outlet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">The report continued, \u201cShe said that she and other gun control advocates are prepared to fight against this proposal. \u2018We advocate for common sense laws that we know will make our community safer and permitless carry will do the opposite of that,\u201d Hathaway said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">Except, the jury is still out on whether gun control actually has any positive impact on crime. While there are studies that do, indeed, suggest just that, there are issues with <a href=\"https:\/\/reason.com\/video\/2022\/03\/31\/do-studies-show-gun-control-works-no\/\" class=\"stylish-link\"><span class=\"s1\">pretty much all of them<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">Plus, the push for the liberalization of gun laws really began in the 1990s at the state level, which happens to coincide with the drop in violent crime from their historic highs. While correlation doesn\u2019t equal causation, if folks like Hathaway are right, we\u2019d expect to see the exact opposite, but we didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">As such, there\u2019s little reason to believe further liberalization of gun laws in Florida will do what Moms Demand Action claim.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">(I contacted the governor\u2019s office for comment, but didn\u2019t receive a reply as of this writing.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>Like this article?
