Having been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) \u2014 a progressive disease that affects the nervous system \u2014 Sanguin sought access to medical assistance in dying (MAiD). Churchill Park United\u2019s ministry team unanimously approved her request to hold the \u201cCrossing Over Ceremony\u201d at the church.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe moment we rolled her in \u2026 and sat her up in her recliner, she lit up like a Christmas tree,\u201d Lynda Sanguin-Colpitts, one of Betty Sanguin\u2019s daughters, told <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/broadview.org\/medically-assisted-death-church\/\"><span>Broadview<\/span><\/a><span>, an outlet funded by the government of Canada. \u201cI hadn\u2019t seen that much life in her eyes, so much joy [in a long time]. And honestly I think part of it was just being in the church.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>On its website, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchillparkunited.ca\/\"><span>Churchill Park United<\/span><\/a><span> describes itself as an \u201caffirming congregation\u201d with \u201cprogressive, relevant, and inspiring\u201d worship. It requires attendees to be double-vaccinated in order to attend services.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Sanguin \u2014 unable to speak \u2014 wrote on a whiteboard: \u201cWelcome to my special day. I love you all so much.\u201d Her children set up an area rug and recliner to make their mother feel more comfortable. The family also set up chairs surrounding Sanguin for her children, grandchildren, and friends.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThere was an opportunity for every single person who wanted to come and hold her hand and tell her they loved her and say goodbye,\u201d Ren\u00e9e Sanguin, another of Betty Sanguin\u2019s daughters, told Broadview. \u201cIt was very touching and very intimate.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>After Rev. Dawn Rolke of Churchill Park United offered a blessing, all of the attendees left the ceremony while a medical team completed the assisted suicide procedure. The family was invited back into the sanctuary while Sanguin died.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThat part was harder,\u201d Sanguin-Colpitts told Broadview. \u201cWe just stood around her and we cried, we laughed, we did everything.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Rolke was surprised that the ceremony induced widespread criticism.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIt\u2019s good for any congregation to discern: What do we believe about our space? Is it more sacred than other spaces? What is the purpose of the sanctuary?\u201d she said to Broadview. \u201cWho is allowed in it, and what can happen in it? For other congregations asked to consider a service of crossing-over, knowing their congregation\u2019s position on their space will be quite important.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In response, Pastor Jacob Reaume of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/trinitybiblechapel.ca\/\"><span>Trinity Bible Chapel<\/span><\/a><span> in Waterloo, Ontario, explained to The Daily Wire that \u201c<\/span><span>suicide is condemned by Scripture and has been condemned by the church since the beginning.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cEarlier generations correctly referred to suicide as \u2018self-murder,\u2019 and I think we should start using that terminology once again because it adequately describes the sin,\u201d he said. \u201cSeveral persons in Scripture murdered themselves, including King Saul and Judas Iscariot. The Scriptures always portray it as a shameful act, and the ones who commit the sin of self-murder die ignominiously.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Reaume pointed out that suicide is a violation of the sixth commandment, given in Exodus 20:13 \u2014 \u201cYou shall not murder.\u201d Medical practitioners who assist in suicide are therefore \u201ccomplicit in first-degree murder, and they should be charged criminally,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Canada, which <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/health-canada\/services\/medical-assistance-dying.html\"><span>legalized<\/span><\/a><span> assisted suicide in 2016, is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nationalpost.com\/health\/canada-mental-illness-maid-medical-aid-in-dying\"><span>slated<\/span><\/a><span> to become one of the few nations to offer the procedure for people with depression, PTSD, and other mental health issues.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI attended a local townhall meeting when assisted suicide first became legal in Canada,\u201d Reaume described. \u201cAn old doctor rose to speak on the issue. He passionately condemned the government and the doctors who will participate in the act. He reminded the room \u2014 which included politicians \u2014 that the Nazi doctors who lawfully murdered their patients were tried and hanged at Nuremberg.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Likewise, Pastor Tim Stephens of <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fairviewbaptistchurch.ca\/\"><span>Fairview Baptist Church<\/span><\/a><span> in Calgary, Alberta, told The Daily Wire that assisted suicide is an artifact of the \u201cculture of death.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cAll life is important, even the terminally ill, because we all are created in the image of God,\u201d Stephens said, in reference to Genesis 1:26-27. \u201cWe have dignity, value and worth as human beings that are categorically different than animals or other forms of life. Our value is not imposed upon us by society or any human invention, it is intrinsic, coming from the fact that we are made by God Himself.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Murder is wrong \u201cfor God made man in His own image,\u201d Stephens added, citing Genesis 9:6. \u201cThis is the foundation for the doctrine of the sanctity, or sacredness, of every human life.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cGod is the author and sustainer of life, Stephens continued. \u201cLife and death are in God\u2019s hands, not ours. I can\u2019t choose when and where I\u2019m born, this is God\u2019s prerogative. Likewise, I can\u2019t choose when and where I die. That is God\u2019s right, not mine or any other person\u2019s.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Stephens \u2014 who was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/watch-jailed-canadian-pastor-tim-stephens-released-after-international-attention\"><span>jailed<\/span><\/a><span> two years ago in a maximum-security facility for refusing to close his church in the face of COVID-19 lockdowns \u2014 said that Canadian lawmakers must make assisted suicide illegal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe legalization of doctor-assisted suicide will lead to impact the value of palliative care, it will lead to the elderly thinking their life is not worth living and that they are a burden upon their family and society, it will put doctors in a moral quandary to choose between conscience and employment, it will lead to abuse of the elderly as family members look for their inheritance, and it will be expanded to include so many others whose lives are deemed less valuable,\u201d he asserted. \u201cThe civil government has the primary task under God to uphold justice. It\u2019s hard to think of a more pressing issue than murder to make illegal and punish appropriately.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Sanguin \u2014 who has six children, 12 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren \u2014 was described as an active church member in her obituary, which was published in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/passages.winnipegfreepress.com\/passage-details\/id-306327\/Sanguin_%20Betty\"><span>Winnipeg Free Press<\/span><\/a><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cAs the sun streamed through the stained glass windows in the music-filled sanctuary, surrounded by her children, grandchildren and close friends, Betty hosted a simple Crossing Over Ceremony and then let go of her hold on this life,\u201d the obituary described. \u201cShe sang in many choirs, played the piano for her family and in the end found solace in listening to gospel music.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Daily Wire reached out to the office of Churchill Park United for comment; no response was received in time for publication.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span>The Daily Wire is one of America\u2019s fastest-growing conservative media companies for breaking news, investigative reporting, sports, podcasts, in-depth analysis, books, and entertainment for a reason: because we believe in what we do.
