Wade<\/em> into federal law.<\/p>\n<p>Politico <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2022\/05\/02\/supreme-court-abortion-draft-opinion-00029473\">broke the news<\/a> Monday that the Supreme Court has voted to strike down the landmark decision, reporting that Justice Samuel Alito had written a draft that is an \u201cunflinching repudiation\u201d of <em>Roe v. Wade<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The draft majority opinion, which is not final, says <em>Roe v. Wade<\/em> was egregiously wrong. \u201cWe hold that <i>Roe<\/i> and <i>Casey<\/i> must be overruled,\u201d Alito reportedly wrote. \u201cIt is time to heed the Constitution and return the issue of abortion to the people\u2019s elected representatives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If <em>Roe<\/em> is overturned, the power to decide whether abortions are allowed would be turned over to the states \u2014 and many Republican states have already passed trigger legislation banning abortion.<\/p>\n<p>Frantic to protect abortion access, Democrats are now pushing to eliminate the filibuster, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/democrats-filibuster-roe-wade-abortion-e90cba84-d1c5-4500-8ad9-bb5396660e89.html\">Axios reported Tuesday<\/a>, noting that anxieties over abortion may drive more Democrats to the polls ahead of the midterm elections.<\/p>\n<p>Democrat Senators Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona have not consented to calls to eliminate the filibuster. In the 50-50 Senate chamber, Democrats need to get at least 60 votes to nix the filibuster and pass legislation codifying <em>Roe<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>According to Axios, Manchin blocked the progressive Women\u2019s Health Protection Act with Republicans last month and is committed to protecting the filibuster.<\/p>\n<p>If he were to change his mind, he would be siding with the most progressive members of the Democratic Party, like New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren. Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, a progressive independent who caucuses with the Democrats, also called for the end of the filibuster late Monday evening.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">End the filibuster. We\u2019ve had almost 50 years to codify this into law,\u201d Wisconsin Democratic Senate candidate and state Treasurer Sarah Godlewski told Axios late Monday evening in front of the Supreme Court. \u201cThe Senate just needs to like get rid of the filibuster and then get this done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Godlewski also tweeted: \u201cDemocrats need to act NOW\u2014end the filibuster, codify Roe, and defend reproductive freedom. his fight is too urgent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pennsylvania\u2019s Democratic Lieutenant Governor John Fetterman warned that his party \u201ccannot afford to wait,\u201d tweeting, \u201cDemocrats have to act quickly \u2014 get rid of the filibuster to pass the Women\u2019s Health Protection Act + finally codify Roe into law.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Let&#8217;s be clear: The right to an abortion is sacred. <\/p>\n<p>Democrats have to act quickly \u2013 get rid of the filibuster to pass the Women&#8217;s Health Protection Act + finally codify Roe into law.<\/p>\n<p>We cannot afford to wait.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 John Fetterman (@JohnFetterman) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JohnFetterman\/status\/1521299340169560065?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 3, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Ohio Democratic senatorial candidate Tim Ryan also said that \u201ccontrol of the Senate has never been more important.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s time to end the filibuster, pass the Women\u2019s Health Protection Act, and fight like hell to make sure all Ohio families are free to make these critical decisions without interference from politicians in Columbus or Washington,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/05\/02\/politics\/senate-democrats-filibuster-abortion-rights\/index.html\">Ryan said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And the Democratic National Committee <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/05\/02\/politics\/senate-democrats-filibuster-abortion-rights\/index.html\">predicted<\/a>,\u00a0\u201cMake no mistake: reproductive rights will be on the ballot and this midterm election is more important now than ever before.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The Supreme Court has upheld precedent and protected access to abortion for decades.
