During the interview, Boothe asked him whether he would take action to ban gender transition surgeries on minors, after members of the Biden administration said such surgeries are \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/white-house-early-trans-surgeries-hormones-are-crucial-for-kids-teens-who-identify-as-trans\">crucial<\/a>\u201d and a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/watch-psaki-insists-gender-affirming-health-care-for-kids-is-a-best-practice\">best practice<\/a>,\u201d and have claimed that \u201cthere is no argument among <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/bidens-highest-ranking-transgender-official-says-medical-professionals-unanimously-agree-about-value-of-gender-affirming-care\">medical professionals<\/a> \u2026 about the value and the importance of gender-affirming care.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, the Florida Department of Health has issued guidelines for treating gender dysmorphia, recommending against gender transition, puberty blockers, and hormones, but would you support a state law banning any of those medical interventions for children?\u201d Boothe asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would ban the \u2014 yeah I would ban the sex change, the operations,\u201d DeSantis responded. \u201cI think that it\u2019s something that \u2014 you can\u2019t get a tattoo if you\u2019re 12 years old. When they say \u2018gender-affirming care,\u2019 what they mean, a lot of times is, you are really, you\u2019re castrating a young boy, you\u2019re sterilizing a young girl, you\u2019re doing mastectomies for these very young girls. And, here\u2019s the thing, what our guidance pointed to, and [Surgeon General Joseph Ladopo] did a great job, for these young kids, 80% of the cases resolve themselves as they grow up, and so you\u2019re doing things that are permanently altering them, and then they\u2019re not gonna be able to reverse that, and so I don\u2019t think it\u2019s appropriate for kids at all, I think the guidance is right, but I think that there should be additional protections. \u2018Cause, you know, when you\u2019re growing up, there are things that, you know, it\u2019s an awkward time, and it seems like there\u2019s a concerted effort in society to push these kids in to do some type of medical intervention, and in our judgement that\u2019s not healthy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Florida Department of Health <a href=\"https:\/\/www.floridahealth.gov\/_documents\/newsroom\/press-releases\/2022\/04\/20220420-gender-dysphoria-guidance.pdf?utm_source=floridahealth.gov&#038;utm_medium=referral&#038;utm_campaign=newsroom&#038;utm_content=article&#038;url_trace_7f2r5y6=https:\/\/www.floridahealth.gov\/newsroom\/2022\/04\/20220420-gender-dysphoria-press-release.pr.html\">released guidance<\/a> on April 20 opposing transgender treatments for children. \u201cSystematic reviews on hormonal treatment for young people show a trend of low-quality evidence, small sample sizes, and medium to high risk of bias,\u201d the guidance said. \u201cA paper published in the International Review of Psychiatry states that 80% of those seeking clinical care will lose their desire to identify with the nonbirth sex. One review concludes that \u2018hormonal treatments for transgender adolescents can achieve their intended physical effects, but evidence regarding their psychosocial and cognitive impact is generally lacking.\u2019 The Department recommended against \u2018social gender transition,\u2019 i.e. changing a child\u2019s name, pronouns, and clothing, as a treatment option for children; opposed prescribing puberty blockers or hormone therapy to children and adolescents; and opposed gender reassignment surgeries as a treatment option. Based on the currently available evidence, \u2018encouraging mastectomy, ovariectomy, uterine extirpation, penile disablement, tracheal shave, the prescription of hormones which are out of line with the genetic make-up of the child, or puberty blockers, are all clinical practices which run an unacceptably high risk of doing harm,&#8217;\u201d the guidance concluded.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to Florida\u2019s guidance, Texas Governor Greg Abbott has proposed investigating parents and medical professionals who participate in gender transition surgeries on a child, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/texas-to-potentially-prosecute-sex-change-surgeries-on-minors-as-child-abuse\">potentially prosecuting<\/a> them for child abuse.
