Reuters is owned by the Thomson Corporation and the AP is a non-profit cooperative formed by various newspapers and broadcasters.<\/p>\n<p><span><strong>Fact Check:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Instagram post features a picture of Jacob Rothschild, the <a href=\"https:\/\/family.rothschildarchive.org\/people\/146-nathaniel-charles-jacob-rothschild-1936\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">4th Lord Rothschild<\/a>, and text that claims his family owns two of the largest news agencies in the world. \u201cThere are 6 media companies that exist today, but there used to be 88,\u201d the <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/Jf4UV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">post<\/a> claims. \u201cAll 6 get their news from Reuters and the Associated Press. Reuters owns the AP and Rothschilds own Reuters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While the post is partially correct that six companies control about 90 percent of American media, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/these-6-corporations-control-90-of-the-media-in-america-2012-6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Business Insider<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fool.com\/investing\/stock-market\/market-sectors\/communication\/media-stocks\/big-6\/#:~:text=Some%20estimates%20claim%20as%20much,)%20(NASDAQ%3AFOX).\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Motley Fool<\/a>, there is no evidence to suggest the Rothschild family owns any major news agency, including Reuters or AP. Check Your Fact found no <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=Rothschild+own+media+outlets&#038;rlz=1C1CHBF_enUS820US820&#038;oq=Rothschil&#038;aqs=chrome.0.69i59j0i433i512j0i131i433i512j69i57j46i199i291i433i512j69i60l3.1763j0j4&#038;sourceid=chrome&#038;ie=UTF-8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">credible news reports<\/a> to corroborate the Instagram post\u2019s claim.<\/p>\n<p>AP is described as an \u201cindependent global news organization\u201d on its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ap.org\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">website.<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/ropercenter.cornell.edu\/associated-press\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Roper Center for Public Opinion Research<\/a> explains the outlet is \u201cneither privately owned nor government-funded\u201d but rather a nonprofit cooperative owned by \u201cAmerican newspaper and broadcast members.\u201d <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2022\/01\/28\/fact-check-klaus-schwab-mother-rothschild\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Is Klaus Schwab Related To The Rothschild Family?)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAP is an independent, not-for-profit news cooperative, owned by no one,\u201d said Lauren Easton, an AP spokesperson, in an email to Check Your Fact. \u201cReuters has nothing to do with AP.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reuters is owned by Thomson Reuters, a Canadian information news company, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/topic\/Thomson-Reuters\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Britannica<\/a>. The agency\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/ir.thomsonreuters.com\/static-files\/6938b043-b0c4-453f-842a-90ac19b5febd#page=167\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2021 Annual Report<\/a> stated its principal shareholder is the Woodbridge Company Limited, which owns 67 percent of the company\u2019s shares. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomsonreuters.com\/en\/about-us\/board-of-directors.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">David Thomson<\/a> is the chairman of both Thomson Reuters and Woodbridge, which is his family\u2019s investment company.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Rothschild family is frequently the target of conspiracy theories. <a href=\"https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2022\/04\/14\/fact-check-russian-rothschild-coat-of-arms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Check Your Fact<\/a> recently debunked a claim that the family shares a coat of arms with the Russian Federation.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A post shared on Instagram claims the Rothschild family owns Reuters and the Associated Press (AP).
