She had made numerous attempts to gain a medical exemption from the booster.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was in class, I received an email stating, \u2018you have been unenrolled and you have 72 hours to leave campus,&#8217;\u201d Puentes told The Daily Wire in a phone interview.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_375083\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\">\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-375083\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Courtesy of Ellie Puentes<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Puentes always had reservations about the COVID-19 vaccine, citing her age, worries about adverse effects, and how quickly the vaccine was developed and put to market. \u201cIt kind of freaked me out a little bit,\u201d she told The Daily Wire.<\/p>\n<p>So, she applied for a religious exemption. The school denied her, and in August, Puentes reluctantly\u00a0received her first dose of the Pfizer vaccine. She had no reaction, and in September received her second dose.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s when Puentes became sick with a sore throat and other symptoms. She later suffered from extreme abdomen pain and vomiting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese health problems culminated in her going to an emergency room, where she stayed for six hours and was diagnosed with gastritis,\u201d reported <a href=\"https:\/\/thechicagothinker.com\/exclusive-union-college-sophomore-gets-expelled-for-refusing-booster-shot-despite-her-doctor-saying-her-getting-booster-is-ill-advised\/\">The Chicago Thinker<\/a>, which first broke the story. \u201cSeven months later, she continues to have symptoms of vomiting and diarrhea.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/vaccines\/expect\/after.html?s_cid=10509:side%20effects%20of%20covid%20vaccine:sem.ga:p:RG:GM:gen:PTN:FY21\">Centers for Disease Control<\/a> (CDC), common side effects after getting a COVID-19 vaccine include tiredness, headache, muscle pain, chills, fever, and nausea. The CDC explains, \u201cSome people have side effects from the vaccine, which are normal signs that their body is building protection. These side effects may affect their ability to do daily activities, but they should go away in a few days.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Puentes subsequently provided a doctor\u2019s note and asked for a medical exemption.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is my opinion that Ms. Puentes be granted an exception from receiving the booster COVID vaccine,\u201d her doctor wrote in a letter to Union College. \u201cShe currently is in an unfavorable state of health, presumably caused by the vaccine itself and getting this vaccine is ill-advised.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She received a denial on April 11, 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Pushing back against Puentes\u2019 doctor\u2019s advice, Union College\u2019s Director of Health Services Angela Stefanatos wrote, \u201cThe vaccine is not associated with gastritis, which is the diagnosis you received in the ER two weeks after vaccination. Two episodes of streptococcal sore throat in 7 months is not an indication of a weakened immune system. There is no evidence in the literature that vaccination for Covid19 weakens the immune system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe committee is denying the request for a medical exemption for the booster.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_375092\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-375092\" class=\"wp-image-375092 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Screen-Shot-2022-04-28-at-2.54.52-PM-300x576.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"576\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Screen-Shot-2022-04-28-at-2.54.52-PM-300x576-1.png 300w, https:\/\/dw-wp-production.imgix.net\/2022\/04\/Screen-Shot-2022-04-28-at-2.54.52-PM-156x300.png 156w, https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Screen-Shot-2022-04-28-at-2.54.52-PM.png 542w\" \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-375092\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Courtesy of Ellie Puentes<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Notably, fully-vaccinated Puentes tested positive for COVID-19 in December 2021, which suggests that the student has what scientists have called \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/01\/19\/well\/live\/breakthrough-covid-immunity.html\">hybrid immunity.<\/a>\u201d The New York Times reported in January that hybrid immunity is the \u201ccombined protection of pre-existing vaccine antibodies and natural antibodies from a breakthrough infection.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Daily Wire reached out to Union College about the expulsion and Puentes\u2019 immunity but did not receive a response.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wish I knew, I tried everything,\u201d an exhausted Puentes told The Daily Wire, when asked\u00a0why she believes the school was being unreasonable about her request.\u00a0\u201cObviously, it was my health that was in jeopardy, and they were not listening.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She does have one suspicion, though.<\/p>\n<p>Puentes believes she might have been an easy target for expulsion due to her financial situation. While she knows of other students who\u2019ve received exemptions, Puentes is the recipient of academic scholarships that cover most of her tuition. She otherwise has limited economic means.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPuentes wrote that her expulsion \u2018felt personal,\u2019 as she is a first-generation, low-income college student and a recipient of an academic scholarship that paid for the majority of her tuition,\u201d the Thinker reported. \u201cShe feels that \u2018it\u2019s easy to let someone like [her] go,\u2019 because Union College \u2018no longer had to pay for [her] education and knew that [she] did not have the financial resources to fight back.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The student said it was \u201cunjust for an institution to withdraw a student or fire a staff member because they have chosen not to comply with a policy with valid reasoning.\u201d If she complied, Puentes added, \u201cit would\u2019ve enforced that what the institution is doing is okay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><i>The Daily Wire is one of America\u2019s fastest-growing conservative media companies for breaking news, investigative reporting, sports, podcasts, in-depth analysis, books, and entertainment for a reason: because we believe in what we do.
