Ron DeSantis declared that \u201cDisney is a guest in Florida\u201d and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/breaking-desantis-signs-bills-into-law-that-strips-disney-of-special-powers-blocks-crt-in-schools\"><span>signed<\/span><\/a><span> legislation to end the Reedy Creek Improvement District \u2014 a 39-square-mile special governing and tax district that hosted Disney World while allowing Disney to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/shell-companies-and-shady-lawyers-why-did-disney-get-to-govern-itself-in-florida\"><span>avoid<\/span><\/a><span> certain state taxes and regulations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/disneys-clash-with-florida-has-ceos-on-alert-11651440367\"><span>The Wall Street Journal<\/span><\/a><span>, CEOs are now asking the question how they can steer clear of the same outcome for their own firms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe No. 1 concern CEOs have is, \u2018When should I speak out on public issues?\u2019\u201d former Medtronic CEO and current Harvard Business School senior fellow Bill George told the outlet. \u201cAs one CEO said to me, \u2018I want to speak out on social issues, but I don\u2019t want to get involved in politics.\u2019 Which I said under my breath, \u2018That\u2019s not possible.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Wall Street Journal noted that some executives may feel a sense of relief, as they can focus on maximizing shareholder returns while staying away from raging political debates. Indeed, corporate governance lawyer David Berger told the outlet that lawmakers are growing in their willingness to take on business when it is advantageous for them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIt used to be that Republicans especially \u2014 but both parties \u2014 liked big business,\u201d he explained. \u201cAnd now what you\u2019re seeing is both parties like to use big business as political footballs one way or the other.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Julie Schertell, the CEO of Georgia-based manufacturing company Neenah, said that \u201cprobably anybody sitting in a leadership role\u201d is following the Disney situation \u201cto some degree.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cBecause I want folks to assume positive intent, like \u2018Here\u2019s what we\u2019re trying to do, and if it feels like a misstep, let\u2019s talk about that. And of course, correct on it,\u2019\u201d she said with respect to considering employees\u2019 concerns.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Ron Williams \u2014 the former chairman of Aetna who now sits on the boards of Boeing, Johnson &#038; Johnson, and American Express \u2014 explains that navigating politics is a \u201cchallenging job\u201d for executives.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cCompanies often deal in substance, and politicians often deal with foils,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd so, you know, companies can inadvertently become a foil for different political issues. It\u2019s not enough to know what you want to do.
