What it&#8217;ill do is gather together best practices \u2026 &#038; disseminate those best practices to the operators that have been executing &#038; addressing this threat for years\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/VbHF6Wek2Y\">pic.twitter.com\/VbHF6Wek2Y<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Tom Elliott (@tomselliott) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/tomselliott\/status\/1520764920048066562?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 1, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cRepublicans are calling it \u2018Orwellian\u2019 and comparing it to the Ministry of Truth in the novel \u20181984,\u2019\u201d Bash said of the <a href=\"https:\/\/dailywire.com\/news\/trump-impeachment-witness-shreds-bidens-government-disinformation-board-needs-a-catchy-slogan\/\">board<\/a>. \u201cCan you clarify what exactly is this? What exactly will this disinformation governance board do? Will it monitor American citizens?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDana, I\u2019m very pleased to do so. It\u2019s clear, I mean, those criticisms are precisely the opposite of what this small working group within the Department of Homeland Security will do,\u201d Mayorkas replied. \u201cAnd I think we probably could have done a better job of communicating what it does and does not do. The fact is that disinformation that creates a threat to the security of the homeland is our responsibility to address. And this department has been addressing it for years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mayorkas then suggested that the board would simply be addressing <a href=\"https:\/\/dailywire.com\/news\/gop-leader-kevin-mccarthy-torches-biden-over-admins-new-orwellian-disinformation-governance-board\/\">disinformation<\/a> from foreign sources \u2014 such as Russia, Iran, or China \u2014 that would pose a national security threat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know the problems but it\u2019s not clear to me how this governance board will act. What will it do?\u201d Bash pressed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, what it does, it works to ensure that the way in which we address threats, the connectivity between threats and acts of violence are addressed without infringing on free speech,\u201d Mayorkas said, noting that the board would not have \u201coperational authority\u201d to act but would work to provide information to those who did.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWill American citizens be monitored?\u201d Bash asked directly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d Mayorkas replied.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGuarantee that?\u201d Bash pushed harder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo what we do, we in the Department of Homeland Security don\u2019t monitor American citizens,\u201d Mayorkas continued to object.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t, but will this change that?\u201d Bash kept digging.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, no, the board does not have any operational capability,\u201d Mayorkas said again.<\/p>\n<p>Bash went on to point out some of the partisan questions about the board \u2014 and Nina Jankowicz, who has been tapped to head the board \u2014 noting that many appeared to be concerned that she would not act in a neutral fashion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWould you be okay if Donald Trump were president, if he created this disinformation governance board?
