They secured just the second no-hitter in franchise history \u2014 10 years after Johan Santana threw his by himself \u2014 and the 17th combined no-hitter in MLB history.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s the first one I\u2019ve been a part of and I\u2019m glad it\u2019s with this group of guys,\u201d said Megill, who threw the first five innings. \u201cI\u2019m ecstatic.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/20220429_MetsPhillies021cs.jpg\"><\/a><figcaption>Tylor Megill struck out five in five innings for the Mets in a combined no-hitter over the Phillies. <\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Corey Sipkin for the NY POST<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The dance with history marked the latest clutch moment early this season for the Mets (15-6), especially as they shut down a powerful Phillies (10-11) offense that had scored 32 runs over its last four games before Friday. And it came as a late surprise to most of the pitchers involved.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cNobody knew in the bullpen, not a single person,\u201d Smith said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Except at least one: the reliever tasked with finishing off the game that would etch them all into Mets history.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Still, Diaz responded by striking out the side against the heart of the Phillies\u2019 order. He got Bryce Harper, Nick Castellanos and J.T. As it turned out, Diaz only needed McCann.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce [Diaz] had Realmuto down to the last strike, you get this super tingly feeling of excitement,\u201d said Pete Alonso, whose solo homer in the sixth followed Jeff McNeil\u2019s two-run double in the fifth to give the Mets all the offense they would need.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re like, \u2018I hope this is it. I hope he doesn\u2019t hit a broken-bat duck-fart over somebody\u2019s head or anything.\u2019 You\u2019re just praying, it\u2019s like, \u2018Please, please, please let this happen.\u2019 The way the crowd got into it at the end, it was truly special.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The obligatory defensive gem that saves any good no-hitter came in the third inning, when Jean Segura hit a line drive to right-center field. Rodriguez walked Kyle Schwarber \u2014 the slugger walked in all three plate appearances \u2014 with one out in the seventh before quickly getting Alec Bohm to ground into an inning-ending double play.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Lugo came on in the top of the eighth with a runner on first and one out.
