With Rob Lowe <a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/episode\/6tauIKsQXlvj68awdudiFX?si=12Jj6zSlRe23R8bBUFGryQ\">podcast<\/a>, actor Michael Douglas revealed the reason why Debra Winger lost her chance to co-star with him in \u201cRomancing The Stone\u201d: he says she bit him on the arm.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Lowe prompted Douglas \u2014 who had become a TV star with \u201cThe Streets of San Francisco\u201d but then turned to producing highly successful films including the multi-Oscar winning \u201cOne Flew Over the Cuckoo\u2019s Nest\u201d \u2014 by mentioning director Bob Zemeckis \u201cwho really turned you into the leading man movie star you were meant to be in \u2018Romancing the Stone.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u201cHe was great,\u201d Douglas recalled. \u00a0\u201c\u2019Romancing the Stone\u2019 was one of those projects I was, again, producing. I didn\u2019t really have the intention of doing anything; \u2018Rromancing\u2019 was written, first time, by a woman named Diane Thomas, who was working as a waitress at Alice\u2019s Restaurant on the pier in Malibu. \u2026 This was her first script, and it was great. I had a studio relationship at that time at Columbia, Sherry Lansing, who I had met, was the executive I had met on \u201cChina Syndrome,\u201d was there, and ended up buying the script for a substantial amount of money and was criticized, supposedly, for why would you pay that much money for a first-term writer?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u201cMy take on the material was first-time, tenth-time, if it\u2019s good, why should somebody be punished when it\u2019s good?\u201d Douglas remarked.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u201cSo I was really happy, it was a great piece, and then I was trying to figure out who the right director was to do it, and Bob, bless his soul, had gone to USC film school and had done a couple of movies, one was called \u201cUsed Cars\u201d and the other one was \u201cI Want To Hold Your Hand,\u201d and he had Steven Spielberg as his sort of mentor and also executive producer, and those two pictures didn\u2019t work out very well, so poor Bob had sort of fallen in with Bob Gale, his writing partner, into this sort of writing thing, he was all of 25 or 26\u00a0 years old,\u201d Douglas continued.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u201cHe was a has-been at 25,\u201d Lowe joked.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u201cHe was a has-been at 25,\u201d Douglas echoed. \u201cAnd I loved \u2018Used Cars,\u2019 I thought he had a great sense of humor and the right kind of tone, and so I went after Bob, and also they\u2019re really good writers and all of that.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Then Douglas told his story about Winger:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\"><em>So we go down to Mexico to do a pre-production thing to figure out how to do this thing. And like the classic story of the script where it says two words, \u201cRome burns,\u201d which means about a month of shooting and production and all that \u2026 in Diane\u2019s script we had this thing called the mud-slide. And anyway, we got down to the realities of what we were going to do, down there in terms of shooting, this is really tough, and on the way back we stopped back to see Amy Irving, who was the studio\u2019s, no sorry, I\u2019m getting it wrong, it was Debra Winger. It was Debra Winger, she was the studio\u2019s first choice. We were in Mexico, she was in Texas doing \u201cTerms of Endearment.\u201d And she normally doesn\u2019t deal with actors while she\u2019s doing a film, which I understand. She was like, \u201cI\u2019ll hear what they have to say.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote>\n<div>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\"><em>We didn\u2019t actually go to the set; she was spending her time in the hospital because she plays terminally ill in the picture. So she was doing method work, I guess, staying and living in the hospital. She comes out with us to have dinner one night, we all have dinner together, we\u2019re talking and knocking back tequilas and this and that, and we walk out and, just as you would kind of go \u201cOh you!\u201d and give somebody a little a punch in the arm, she goes \u201cOh you!\u201d and she reaches over and she bites me \u2013 on my arm. \u201cAaargh! \u201cAaargh!\u201d Bites me! Bites me!<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\"><em>So I go, she\u2019s like joking and I\u2019m looking at her and I go, \u201cI don\u2019t know man,\u201d and I\u2019m thinking, \u201cThis could be rough, she seems interested,\u201d I go back and she\u2019s broken the skin and all that.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\"><em>So I go back, we get back, Bob and I go back, we go back to Hollywood<b> <\/b>and we go down to see the studio to talk to them about our scout and our location scout and \u00a0what happened and about Debra Winger and all that, and we\u2019re saying the whole thing and we come to Debra Winger and I break down in tears and say, \u201cI can\u2019t go to the jungle with her \u2013 she bit me on the arm! I said I can\u2019t do it!\u201d \u201cNow, Michael, calm down.\u201d \u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s just not worth it! It\u2019s just too hard a picture to do.\u201d So they said, \u201cOkay, all right.\u2019\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\"><em>And fortunately one of the executives at that time was living in a condo and said \u201cYou know, this actress came up to me the other day asking for sugar, knocked on my door.
