Cancel was killed on Monday, his mother Rebecca Cabrera <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/04\/28\/politics\/american-killed-ukraine\/index.html\"><span>told<\/span><\/a><span> CNN.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Cancel\u2019s widow also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/world\/former-marine-dies-fighting-alongside-ukrainians-widow-calls-him-a-hero\"><span>confirmed<\/span><\/a><span> her husband\u2019s death to Fox News. \u201cMy husband did die in Ukraine,\u201d Brittany Cancel said. \u201cHe went there wanting to help people, he had always felt that that was his main mission in life.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">BREAKING: U.S. citizen Willy Joseph Cancel was killed in Ukraine while fighting alongside Ukrainian troops against invading Russian forces, his family confirms to <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ABC?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@ABC<\/a> News. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/fLWXAt2tQ0\">https:\/\/t.co\/fLWXAt2tQ0<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/HaQJ8L6ksH\">pic.twitter.com\/HaQJ8L6ksH<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 ABC News (@ABC) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ABC\/status\/1519982256219172870?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 29, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>According to Fox News, Cancel, who could be the first American to die while fighting in Ukraine, also leaves behind a 7-month-old son.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cMy husband was very brave and a hero,\u201d Brittany said. \u201cI did not expect to be a widow at 23 years old or for our son to be without a father. All I want is for him to come home, and to give him the proper burial he deserves.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>According to his family, Cancel was a former Marine and wanted to become a police officer or firefighter for the FDNY but was affected by what he saw going on in Ukraine. \u201cHe wanted to go over because he believed in what Ukraine was fighting for, and he wanted to be a part of it to contain it there so it didn\u2019t come here, and that maybe our American soldiers wouldn\u2019t have to be involved in it,\u201d Cabrera said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>While Cancel could be the first American to die fighting the Russians in Ukraine, he was not the first American to die in the conflict. Journalist and former New York Times contributor Brent Renaud was killed by Russian forces outside of Kyiv in March.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Daily Wire <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/former-new-york-times-journalist-brent-renaud-killed-in-ukraine\"><span>reported<\/span><\/a><span> that Renaud was in Ukraine during the war \u201cto <\/span><span>film refugees as they attempted to flee their wartorn cities.\u201d Renaud was an award-winning documentary filmmaker who traveled the world to highlight human suffering. The 50-year-old journalist was shot in a suburb of Kyiv.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The New York Times said Renaud was not reporting for the outlet in Ukraine, but the newspaper released a statement remembering Renaud\u2019s talent and work.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWe are deeply saddened to hear of Brent Renaud\u2019s death. Brent was a talented filmmaker who had contributed to The New York Times over the years. Though he had contributed to The Times in the past (most recently in 2015), he was not on assignment for any desk at The Times in Ukraine.
