Deborah Ross <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/judges-financial-disclosure-bill-passes-heads-to-presidents-desk-11651085318\"><span>said<\/span><\/a><span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Judges will now have 45 days to disclose stock transactions of more than $1000. Judicial disclosure forms will also be posted in an online database maintained by the Administrative Office of U.S. Courts.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The bill comes after the Wall Street Journal reported in September <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/judges-financial-disclosure-bill-passes-heads-to-presidents-desk-11651085318\"><span>that<\/span><\/a> <span>\u201c131 federal judges improperly heard 685 court cases between 2010 and 2018 in which they or their family members owned shares of companies that were plaintiffs or defendants in the litigation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In the Senate, the bill was sponsored by Texas Republican Sen. John Cornyn and Delaware Democratic Senator Chris Coons.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cOne of the bedrocks of American democracy is our independent judiciary, and it is imperative that federal judges are held to the same standard of transparency as other federal officials under the STOCK Act,\u201d Cornyn <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cornyn.senate.gov\/content\/news\/cornyn-coons-bill-apply-stock-act-requirements-federal-judges-heads-president%E2%80%99s-desk\"><span>stated<\/span><\/a><span>. \u201cThis legislation will help bring potential conflicts of interest to light and bolster public trust in our judicial system, and I\u2019m glad it is on its way to the President\u2019s desk.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Coons added that the \u201claw will help protect our legal system from conflicts of interests.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>A spokesman for Biden<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/congress-poised-subject-us-judges-more-financial-disclosure-2022-04-27\/\"><span>said<\/span><\/a><span> that the bill seemed to be \u201caligned\u201d with Biden\u2019s goals of \u201cfurthering ethics and transparency in government and restoring trust in institutions.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The legislation for greater transparency in the judicial branch comes as there has been a renewed push to investigate potential instances of insider trading by members of Congress and for regulations on how members buy and sell stocks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Back in January, Missouri Republican Senator Josh Hawley <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawley.senate.gov\/hawley-introduces-bill-banning-insider-trading-congress\"><span>introduced<\/span><\/a><span> the Banning Insider Trading In Congress Act, which would ban members of Congress and their spouses from buying and selling individual stocks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cYear after year, politicians somehow manage to outperform the market, buying and selling millions in stocks of companies they\u2019re supposed to be regulating. Wall Street and Big Tech work hand-in-hand with elected officials to enrich each other at the expense of the country,\u201d Hawley said at the time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>House Speaker Nancy Pelosi <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/pelosi-on-why-congress-should-be-allowed-to-trade-stock-after-dozens-broke-law-we-should-be-able-to\"><span>faced<\/span><\/a><span> criticism after she defended stock trading for members of Congress.
