It\u2019s the end of April. It\u2019s the spring of 2022. How close are we to the end of the pandemic?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are certainly, right now, in this country out of the pandemic phase,\u201d Fauci <a href=\"https:\/\/dailywire.com\/news\/fauci-says-the-pandemic-phase-is-over-but-its-still-too-risky-for-him-to-attend-white-house-correspondents-dinner\/\">replied<\/a>. \u201cNamely, we don\u2019t have 900,000 new infections a day and tens and tens and tens of thousands of hospitalizations and thousands of deaths. We are at a low level right now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, if you\u2019re saying, are we out of the pandemic phase in this country, we are,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Well, that\u2019s pretty clear.<\/p>\n<p>But on Wednesday, Fauci walked it all back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are in a different moment of the pandemic,\u201d Fauci told the Associated Press on Wednesday. While the U.S. has \u201cdecelerated and transitioned into more of a controlled phase\u201d of the virus, he added \u201cby no means does that mean the pandemic is over.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gotcha. We are \u201cout of the pandemic phase,\u201d but \u201cby no means does that mean that the pandemic is over.\u201d That\u2019s clear, right?<\/p>\n<p>Fauci did more damage control Wednesday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/health\/2022\/04\/27\/pandemic-phase-over-fauci-covid\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">telling<\/a> The Washington Post: \u201cThe world is still in a pandemic. There\u2019s no doubt about that. Don\u2019t anybody get any misinterpretation of that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The White House circled the wagons around the 81-year-old Fauci, with Press Secretary Jen Psaki explaining why emergency measures would still be necessary given that Fauci said the \u201cpandemic phase\u201d is over.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, what Dr. Fauci was saying is that we are in a different phase of this pandemic, and that\u2019s absolutely true,\u201d Psaki said.\u00a0\u201cWe also know COVID isn\u2019t over and the pandemic isn\u2019t over,\u201d she added, contradicting what Fauci had said the day before.<\/p>\n<p>Psaki also said that Americans are still catching the virus and \u201cwe have measures that we should all continue to take to protect ourselves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fauci has walked back declarations before. Last year, Fauci said Americans might need a booster shot to be considered \u201cfully vaccinated,\u201d only to say a few days later an extra jab <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2021\/11\/21\/fauci-fully-vaccinated-doesnt-have-to-include-boosters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wasn\u2019t necessary<\/a> to earn that status.<\/p>\n<p>And in August 2021, Fauci\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2021\/08\/23\/1030430529\/dr-fauci-weighs-in-on-the-fdas-approval-of-the-pfizer-vaccine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told<\/a> NPR if enough Americans get vaccinated, the country could \u201creally get some good control over this\u201d by fall or winter 2022.<\/p>\n<p>But later the same day, this time on CNN, Fauci said it won\u2019t take that long. \u201cI have to apologize. When I listened to the tape, I meant to say the spring of 2022, so I did misspeak,\u201d he said. \u201cI didn\u2019t mean the fall \u2014 I misspoke.
