Ron DeSantis over legislation related to LGBT content in education, according to The Wall Street Journal.<\/p>\n<p>DeSantis <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox35orlando.com\/news\/florida-gov-ron-desantis-signs-bill-to-eliminate-reedy-creek-improvement-district\">signed<\/a> a law eliminating Disney\u2019s Reedy Creek Improvement District Friday, ending special administrative and tax privileges the company had enjoyed since 1967 after the company came out against Florida\u2019s Parental Rights in Education bill. Disney\u2019s political allies in the Florida legislature said the company\u2019s best bet at finding a resolution with DeSantis now is to stay out of politics, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/amp\/articles\/disney-strategy-is-to-stay-silent-to-soften-florida-gov-ron-desantiss-blow-11651089850\">according<\/a> to the WSJ.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis was shock and awe from the governor,\u201d Republican Florida state Sen. Jeff Brandes, who voted against the Disney bill, told the WSJ. \u201cIt just shows how big a challenge Disney faced in saying anything at all in the legislative process.\u201d <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/04\/07\/disney-glaad-transgender-family-lgbt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: \u2018Protect Our Families\u2019: Disney To Run Ad About Trans Children For LGBT Activist Group<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Republican lawmakers reportedly told Adam Babington, Disney\u2019s top government affairs official in Florida, that the company may be able to salvage their special district if they stepped out of the public fight, according to the WSJ, citing a person familiar with the matter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCool it off. Let\u2019s not make a big deal about this,\u201d said Babington, according to the WSJ.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWaging culture wars against common-sense legislation \u2013 on parental rights and child safeguarding \u2013 is bad for business, particularly for a company that has built a successful brand over the decades by marketing wholesome entertainment to families,\u201d DeSantis spokeswoman Christina Pushaw told the Daily Caller News Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo corporation could possibly have swayed Governor DeSantis\u2019 dedication to protecting kids and parents\u2019 rights,\u201d Pushaw said. \u201cDisney\u2019s vow to \u2018repeal\u2019 HB 1557 and overrule the majority of Floridians, as well as our legitimately elected government, has backfired as expected.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">In addition to congressional reapportionment, this week\u2019s special session will include termination of legacy special districts and removal of exemptions from the big tech accountability law. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/67sF4E113I\">pic.twitter.com\/67sF4E113I<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Ron DeSantis (@GovRonDeSantis) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GovRonDeSantis\/status\/1516408588234854410?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 19, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Disney <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/03\/10\/disney-ceo-bob-chapek-dont-say-gay-florida-bill\/\">publicly opposed<\/a> Florida\u2019s Parental Rights in Education <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/02\/24\/florida-house-passes-bill-lgbtq-schools-kindergarten-desantis\/\">bill<\/a>, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flsenate.gov\/Session\/Bill\/2022\/1557\/BillText\/e1\/PDF\">bans<\/a> classroom instruction on gender identity and sexual orientation in kindergarten through third grade. The company initially ignored the legislation, which critics and LGBT activists <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/03\/08\/dont-say-gay-legacy-media-activist-slogan-florida-legislation\/\">call<\/a> the \u201cDon\u2019t Say Gay\u201d bill, but CEO Bob Chapek voiced opposition to the bill following a media <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/03\/10\/disney-ceo-bob-chapek-dont-say-gay-florida-bill\/\">pressure campaign<\/a> highlighting Disney\u2019s silence.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for DeSantis denied that the decision to dissolve Reedy Creek was meant as retaliation against Disney, explaining that the privileges conferred to Disney could be seen as a form of favoritism, and eliminating those privileges created a more level playing field.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe bill will be a sword of Damocles over Disney\u2019s head for at least the next year,\u201d Brandes said, according to the WSJ.
