Matt, who attended the same school that his son now attends, says he believes the school is encouraging kids to focus too much on skin color.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cAs a parent here, who\u2019s against racism, I\u2019m against this conversation because now we\u2019re having kids who are in middle school focus on the color of their skin,\u201d he said, adding that divisive concepts should not be being taught in schools, especially middle schools.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Matt said he was able to have his son removed from the homeroom class where he said the teen was being exposed to some of the \u201cdivisive concepts,\u201d but wasn\u2019t able to completely protect him because he said the \u201cconcepts [are] woven into every subject.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>He stated that his son was \u201cpersonally attacked\u201d in English class because of his beliefs related to the topic.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The district\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.k12albemarle.org\/our-division\/anti-racism-policy\/policy\"><span>policy<\/span><\/a><span> can be found online, and gives definitions of concepts like \u201canti-racism,\u201d \u201cindividual racism,\u201d and \u201cinstitutional racism.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The policy says that institutional racism \u201coccurs within institutions and organizations, such as schools, that adopt and maintain policies, practices, and procedures that often unintentionally produce inequitable outcomes for people of color and advantages for white people.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Other <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.k12albemarle.org\/our-division\/anti-racism-policy\"><span>resources<\/span><\/a><span> available on the district\u2019s website include a document asking \u201cAm I an anti-racist?\u201d and an anonymous alert system where people can report alleged racism.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>A spokesman for Albemarle County School District, Phil Giaramita told The Daily Wire that Judge Worrell \u201csupported the division\u2019s anti-racism policy\u201d in his ruling.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWe obviously were pleased that the court agreed with our position that plaintiffs failed to show concrete harm to students from the policy\u2019s implementation. As the Judge noted, there was no justiciable question for the court to decide, meaning there were no claims that could be decided based upon legal principles,\u201d he added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Kate Anderson, one of the lawyers for the parents, said that students in one exercise were told to put \u201cwhite\u201d and \u201cChristian\u201d into a \u201cdominant box\u201d and then encouraged to \u201cdismantle the box\u201d and take an anti-racist pledge.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>According to Anderson, several teachers are upset with the new focus on race instead of academics, especially when getting students back on track after the pandemic.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe school policy was directed at bringing kids to view themselves and everything around them purely through the lens of race, and it was personalizing it by telling students that only white people can be racist. That all the white students are personally and individually responsible for racism,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Anderson added that minority students were told they could not succeed because of their race and because of oppression. According to Matt, several of his co-plaintiffs are minority parents and he is worried that their children have \u201cfelt isolated\u201d because of the policy implementation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>He also claims that he spoke to the school\u2019s principal, vice principal, and superintendent and says he got little feedback.
