I mean, did you ever think \u2026 that when you\u2019d be teaching you\u2019d be worrying about book burnings and banning books?\u00a0All because it doesn\u2019t fit somebody\u2019s political agenda.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmerican teachers have dedicated their lives to teaching our children and lifting them up,\u201d he said. \u201cWe ought to stop making them a target of the culture wars. That\u2019s where this is going.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>During the Wednesday Teacher of the Year event, Biden honored 2022 National Teacher of the Year\u00a0<span class=\"il\">Kurt<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"il\">Russell<\/span>, who works at Ohio\u2019s\u00a0Oberlin High School and was named the teacher of the year by the nonprofit Council of Chief State School Officers, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/04\/27\/politics\/biden-teacher-of-the-year-kurt-russell\/index.html\">according to CNN<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The publication reported that Russell teaches African American history, race, gender, and oppression courses, coaches varsity basketball, and serves as the faculty adviser for the school\u2019s Black Student Union.<\/p>\n<p>He has previously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/ohio-teacher-kurt-russell-2022-national-teacher-of-the-year\/\">pushed back against the suggestion<\/a> that he teaches Critical Race Theory \u2014 which holds that America is fundamentally racist and teaches adherents to view every person and interaction through the lens of race \u2014 saying that he wants his courses to be viewed\u00a0as \u201cnormalized and not different.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStudents must see themselves in the classroom and the curriculum in order to empower and engage,\u201d Russell said in statements Wednesday. \u201cThat\u2019s why I created courses that allow students to feel value. Courses that deal with women\u2019s rights, gay rights and also a survey of Black history.
