Gavin Newsom (D-CA) initially supported the suspension of a 5.6% gas tax hike scheduled to occur on July 1. California lawmakers, however, will <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxbusiness.com\/economy\/california-raise-gas-tax\"><span>fail<\/span><\/a><span> to pause the increase before a May 1 deadline \u2014 even though they have bill language from the governor\u2019s Department of Finance, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2022\/04\/26\/talks-of-suspending-californias-gas-tax-increase-fizzle-out-00027678\"><span>Politico<\/span><\/a><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>At $0.51 per gallon, California already has the highest gas tax in the nation. Meanwhile, prices at California pumps have climbed to $5.68 per gallon as of Wednesday, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/gasprices.aaa.com\/state-gas-price-averages\/\"><span>AAA<\/span><\/a><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIt is clear now that the Legislature will not act in time to provide that immediate, limited relief,\u201d Newsom spokesperson Alex Stack <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2022\/04\/26\/talks-of-suspending-californias-gas-tax-increase-fizzle-out-00027678\"><span>said<\/span><\/a><span> in a statement. \u201cBut we look forward to working with lawmakers on the Governor\u2019s proposal for direct payments to Californians wrestling with rising prices.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Despite the announcement from Newsom\u2019s office, the governor has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/gavin-newsom-opposes-republican-bid-to-pause-sky-high-gas-tax-because-it-would-help-petro-dictators-and-oil-companies\"><span>rejected<\/span><\/a><span> Republicans\u2019 bid to pause California\u2019s gas tax last month, claiming that the move would help \u201cpetro-dictators and oil companies.\u201d In reaction to a bill from Assemblyman Kevin Kiley (R-CA) to pause the tax for half a year, Newsom Communications Director Erin Mellon argued that the proposal \u201ccan be manipulated to help line the pockets of petro-dictators and oil companies who are benefiting from the spike in oil prices across the world.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Instead, she pointed to Newsom\u2019s \u201ctax rebate to provide billions in direct relief to Californians who are suffering from rising gas prices across the country\u201d as a \u201cdirect result\u201d of the Russian invasion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In late March, the governor <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/newsom-pushes-400-gas-price-relief-payments-as-california-fuel-prices-reach-record-levels\"><span>revealed<\/span><\/a><span> that his plan would allow for the distribution of up to $800 per person, meaning one individual with two or more cars would receive the maximum amount. Families with cars registered in multiple family member names could receive even more.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Newsom linked the rise in gas prices to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, despite gas prices steadily increasing since President Joe Biden entered office. \u201cWe\u2019re taking immediate action to get money directly into the pockets of Californians who are facing higher gas prices as a direct result of Putin\u2019s invasion of Ukraine,\u201d he said in a statement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI appreciate Gov. Newsom\u2019s work on developing another option to bring relief to Californians experiencing the rising cost of fuel and consumer goods,\u201d Senate President Pro Tem Toni Atkins (D-CA) added. \u201cThe Senate is focused on ensuring that state money is targeted to those who actually need relief, and we look forward to working with Gov.
