Last summer, Spider Tack was the topic of the day, a<\/span><span> sticky substance that was eventually banned from the game, along with other substances intended to enhance a pitcher\u2019s grip on the baseball.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Pitchers now have their gloves and belts checked in between innings, just to make sure that no nefarious activities are taking place and to protect the \u201cintegrity of the game.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>But, just like everything in life, there are consequences.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>On Tuesday night in St. Louis, five batters were hit by pitches in the game between the New York Mets and the Cardinals, including Mets slugger Pete Alonso, who took a ball to the head from Cardinals reliever Kodi Whitley in the eighth inning.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Pete Alonso is hit on the helmet and the Mets are not happy one bit. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Kh88hgCuKJ\">pic.twitter.com\/Kh88hgCuKJ<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 SNY (@SNYtv) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SNYtv\/status\/1519143556102959105?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 27, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>After the 3-0 victory over the Cardinals, Mets starter Chris Bassitt had a few words to share with Major League Baseball regarding the state of baseballs used during games.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIt\u2019s extremely annoying to see your teammates constantly get hit, and if you get hit by certain pitches it is what it is, but to get hit in the head the amount that we\u2019re getting hit is unbelievable,\u201d Bassitt <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/boxscore\/_\/gameId\/401354503\">said<\/a>. \u201cI had some close calls tonight, and I\u2019ve been hit in the face [by a line drive] and I don\u2019t want to do that to anybody ever, but MLB has a very big problem with the baseballs. They\u2019re bad. Everyone in the league knows it. Every pitcher knows it. They\u2019re bad.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThey don\u2019t care,\u201d he continued. \u201cMLB doesn\u2019t give a damn about it. They don\u2019t care. We\u2019ve told them our problems with them, and they don\u2019t care.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Mets catcher James McCann echoed Bassitt\u2019s thoughts, saying that he\u2019d like pitchers to have access to some kind of substance in order to enhance their grip on the ball, making it safer for hitters at the plate.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIt\u2019s 2022 and there is enough technology out there to figure out the baseballs,\u201d McCann <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/04\/27\/chris-bassitt-rips-mlbs-baseballs-after-latest-plunkings\/\"><span>said<\/span><\/a><span>. \u201cWe want to talk about juiced balls, dead balls, slick balls, sticky balls \u2014 I mean it\u2019s 2022, we should have an answer.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIt\u2019s happened to us as hitters, but you can talk to our pitchers and they will tell you there is something with the balls,\u201d McCann <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/04\/27\/chris-bassitt-rips-mlbs-baseballs-after-latest-plunkings\/\"><span>continued<\/span><\/a><span>. \u201cThe umpires are checking them and they can\u2019t use stuff to grip the ball. As far as I\u2019m concerned, put an on-deck circle behind the mound, give them a pine tar rag, the sunscreen and the rosin and let them use that stick. That stuff has proven it\u2019s not going to improve somebody\u2019s arsenal.
