The startup recently announced a modification of their contracts, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/a-revolt-is-brewing-at-prince-harrys-silicon-valley-gig-betterup\">The Daily Beast<\/a>, which prompted some employees to express their bitterness to the media outlet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s so many of us now who are upset,\u201d one coach lamented, adding, \u201cI would say my heart is broken. And I think there\u2019s really questionable ethics going on.\u201d Another coach echoed, \u201cThey\u2019ve turned us into a commodity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A BetterUp executive, contacted by The Daily Beast, insisted in a note, \u201cNo one will see any sort of decrease in their effective session rate compared to their 2021 effective session rate. \u2026 [W]e are on a multi-year journey, and we will be treating this first year as a learning period.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But one coach dismissed the company\u2019s explanation, saying, \u201cI am relieved, but not satisfied. The fact that [BetterUp] rolled out their initial plan at all makes me suspect of their intentions, and makes me distrust them. It was so demeaning and insulting to have to pressure them not to give us pay cuts\u2014it leaves a bad taste in my mouth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another coach opined, \u201cThis was the power of the collective body here. \u2026 We can\u2019t unionize because we\u2019re independent contractors but there were quite a few of us, over 600, who were furious. We united in pushing back.\u201d She also revealed some coaches had considered taking legal action against the startup.<\/p>\n<p>One coach said the employees had been notified earlier in April that contract changes were imminent. The coach said, \u201cMany of us were very, very excited about it. Instead what they came out with was a program that cut everybody\u2019s pay in the middle of one of the greatest inflation times in history.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When he joined the company, Prince Harry <a href=\"https:\/\/www.betterup.com\/blog\/prince-harry-chief-impact-officer\">stated<\/a>, \u201cI firmly believe that focusing on and prioritizing our mental fitness unlocks potential and opportunity that we never knew we had inside of us. As the Royal Marine Commandos say, \u2018It\u2019s a state of mind.\u2019 We all have it in us.\u00a0Being attuned with your mind, and having a support structure around you, are critical to finding your own version of peak performance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last December, speaking in an interview with the business magazine <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/90702784\/prince-harry-says-quitting-can-be-good-for-your-mental-health\">Fast Company<\/a> about his role as chief impact officer with BetterUp, Prince Harry, who with his wife Meghan Markle reportedly has a net worth of $10 million, was <a href=\"https:\/\/dailywire.com\/news\/cloud-cuckoo-land-prince-harry-worth-10m-blasted-after-saying-people-should-quit-jobs-that-didnt-bring-them-joy\/\">mocked<\/a> after he said of people who had resigned from their jobs, \u201cMany people around the world have been stuck in jobs that didn\u2019t bring them joy, and now they\u2019re putting their mental health and happiness first.
