Given these incredibly small numbers, one might question: Why do so many in Hollywood \u2014 A-listers like Jamie Lee Curtis, Charlize Theron and Gabrielle Union \u2014\u00a0<\/span><span>have children who claim to be trans?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>While trans identification in America has certainly increased in recent years, this growth doesn\u2019t fully explain the fast rising number of trans children in Hollywood. This move toward transgender identity among Hollywood\u2019s youth is reminiscent of the former \u201ctrend\u201d that celebrities were questioned for concerning the rise in children being adopted from foreign countries. Sandra Bullock, Madonna, Connie Britton, Mariska Hargitay, Angelina Jolie, Tom Cruise, and Charlize Theron (whose name will come up later) were all accused of following this new \u201ctrend.\u201d Now, foreign adoptions are less common, and celebrity children coming out as trans is the new phenomenon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>One of the latest examples of a celebrity claiming their child is trans is actress Jamie Lee Curtis. She said her child, formerly Thomas, now goes by the name Ruby. The 63-year-old \u201cHalloween\u201d alum told <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/movies\/jamie-lee-curtis-and-daughter-ruby-on-journey-coming-out-as-trans\/\"><span>People<\/span><\/a><span> that the most difficult adjustment has been learning a new name.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIt\u2019s speaking a new language\u2026learning new terminology and words\u2026 that was the hardest thing, just the regularity of the word\u2026\u201d Curtis said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Curtis continued discussing the struggle she has had with calling her child by a new name: \u201cThe name that you\u2019d given a child. That you\u2019ve been saying their whole life\u2026 Then the pronoun. My husband and I still slip occasionally\u2026 You slow your speech down a little\u2026 You still mess up, I\u2019ve messed up today twice. We\u2019re human.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Basketball star Dwayne Wade and actress Gabrielle Union are outspoken supporters of their trans child. The couple announced in February 2020 that their son, Zion, was actually their daughter, Zaya.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201c[Their child] said, \u2018Hey, so I want to talk to you guys. I think going forward, I\u2019m ready to live my truth. And I want to be referenced as she and her. I would love for you guys to call me Zaya,\u2019\u201d the former Miami Heat star recalled during an appearance on \u201cThe Ellen DeGeneres Show,\u201d per <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/celebrity-moms\/news\/dwyane-wade-shares-how-daughter-zaya-came-out-as-transgender\/\"><span>US Weekly<\/span><\/a><span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cNow it\u2019s our job to one, go out and get information, to reach out to every relationship that we have,\u201d Wade continued during his interview.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The NBA player went on to explain how he and Union decided to contact the cast of the FX drama \u201cPose\u201d \u2014 a show heralded for its trans representation \u2014 after hearing the news.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWe\u2019re just trying to figure out as much information as we can to make sure that we give our child the best opportunity to be her best self,\u201d Wade stated.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Union had similar words of support for the couple\u2019s child, who is now 14. The \u201cCheaper By the Dozen\u201d actress told <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.buzzfeed.com\/terrycarter\/gabrielle-union-dwyane-wade-raising-zaya-lgbtq-parents\"><span>Buzzfeed<\/span><\/a><span>, \u201cIt\u2019s important for us to live and love out loud. We didn\u2019t exactly understand why [supporting Zaya\u2019s trans identity] was a thing because it\u2019s like, we love all our kids out loud. But it is a thing and a lot of people do need an example. [People] do need that [kind of] representation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cSex and the City\u201d alum Cynthia Nixon, who uses the term \u201cqueer\u201d to describe her own sexual identity, shared a photo of her child to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/BkVsiB2F2VY\/?utm_source=ig_embed&#038;ig_rid=697d8b8a-be84-41d3-aa93-ec0bab1f0e61\"><span>Instagram<\/span><\/a><span> on Trans Day of Action in 2018.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI\u2019m so proud of my son Samuel Joseph Mozes (called Seph) who graduated college this month. I salute him and everyone else marking today\u2019s #TransDayOfAction,\u201d Nixon wrote in the caption.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In 2019, the actress shared more thoughts during an interview with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/celebrity-moms\/news\/cynthia-nixon-is-very-proud-of-her-transgender-son\/\"><span>US Weekly<\/span><\/a><span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI\u2019m very proud of him. It\u2019s one of those things. I felt really weird using the other pronoun in public, but people didn\u2019t know it yet,\u201d the \u201cSex and the City\u201d star said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cHe was good with it, and it was really nice, actually, when we announced it. There was some general, you know, voicings of support but generally it was not a big deal\u2026 I was kind of shocked at what a non-event it was, which is just how far we\u2019ve come in such a short amount of time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Charlize Theron is yet another big-name celebrity who says her child is trans. The \u201cAtomic Blonde\u201d star claimed to know that her child was \u201cborn in the wrong gender\u201d when the child said so as a toddler. Theron told the media about the whole event in 2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cYes, I thought she was a boy, too,\u201d the actress said during an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-6938233\/Charlize-Theron-child-thought-boy-girl.html\"><span>interview<\/span><\/a><span> with The Daily Mail. \u201cUntil she looked at me when she was three years old and said: \u2018I am not a boy!\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI have two beautiful daughters who, just like any parent, I want to protect and I want to see thrive,\u201d she continued.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThey were born who they are and exactly where in the world both of them get to find themselves as they grow up, and who they want to be, is not for me to decide. My job as a parent is to celebrate them and to love them and to make sure that they have everything they need in order to be what they want to be. And I will do everything in my power for my kids to have that right and to be protected within that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In 2019 she <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pridesource.com\/article\/charlize-theron-talks-queerness-in-her-films-being-woefully-straight-getting-her-daughters-pronouns-right\/\"><span>told<\/span><\/a><span> Pride Source, \u201cIt became harder for us the older she got that people were still writing about her in the wrong pronouns, and also <\/span><i><span>I<\/span><\/i><span> was still talking about her in the press using the wrong pronoun. It really hurt her feelings.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Annette Bening and Warren Beatty are two other Hollywood mainstays who just so happen to have a kid who identifies as trans. Stephen Ira Beatty is 30 now but was only 14 when Beatty and Bening first discovered that they had a trans child.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Beatty\u2019s parents have been supportive all along, with Bening telling AARP during a 2019 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aarp.org\/entertainment\/celebrities\/info-2019\/annette-bening.html\"><span>interview<\/span><\/a><span>, \u201cHe\u2019s managed something that\u2019s very challenging with great style and great intelligence. He\u2019s an articulate, thoughtful person, and I\u2019m very, very proud of him.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>These instances highlight the increasing popularity of celebrities having trans children. As these children become more publicized, trans kids, in general, continue to make headlines.
