Selenium\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>Selenium is a mineral found in foods such as oysters, brazil nuts, eggs, yellowfin tuna, sardines and sunflower seeds.<\/p>\n<p>It has a number of benefits including boosting metabolic health and helping with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/fabulous\/7231111\/underactive-thyroid-symptoms-test-causes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">thyroid<\/a>\u00a0function.<\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cochranelibrary.com\/cdsr\/doi\/10.1002\/14651858.CD005195.pub4\/abstract\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cochrane review<\/a>\u00a0published in 2018 looked specifically at the supplement and if it could help reduce cancer risk.<\/p>\n<p>Experts found it did not lower the likelihood of cancer and some trials actually reported a higher risk of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/topic\/prostate-cancer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">prostate cancer<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Patients who took the supplement also had a greater risk of developing\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/health\/16384165\/diabetes-type-2-symptoms-seven-signs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">type 2 diabetes<\/a>, experts found.<\/p>\n<p>The<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/topic\/nhs\/page\/15\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u00a0NHS<\/a>\u00a0says you should have 0.075mg of selenium a day if you\u2019re a man and 0.060mg a day if you are a woman \u2014 this applies to ages 19-64.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Vitamins-embed-1.jpg\"><\/a><figcaption>We should be able to get all of the vitamins and minerals we need from the food we consume \u2014 but that\u2019s not always the case.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Shutterstock<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 id=\"2-beta-carotene\">2. Beta carotene<\/h2>\n<p>Carrots, spinach, lettuce, tomatoes, sweet potatoes and broccoli all contain beta carotene and most people can get enough from their diet.<\/p>\n<p>People usually take it additionally to help promote good eye health and vision as well as healthy skin.<\/p>\n<p>A study\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6636175\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">published in 2019<\/a>\u00a0found a link between those who took a -supplement and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/topic\/lung-cancer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lung cancer<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This was found in people who\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/topic\/smoking\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">smoked<\/a>\u00a0or had previously been exposed to asbestos.<\/p>\n<p>Experts looked at 29,000 male smokers and found that those who took 20mg a day of beta carotene for five to eight years, had an 18 per cent higher risk of lung cancer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo not take more than 7mg of beta-carotene supplements a day unless advised to by a doctor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople who smoke or who have been exposed to asbestos are advised not to take any beta-carotene supplements,\u201d the NHS says.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"3-folic-acid\">3. Folic acid<\/h2>\n<p>Folic acid is a key supplement \u2014 and one that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/topic\/pregnancy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pregnant women<\/a>\u00a0are advised to take during\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/topic\/pregnancy-childbirth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pregnancy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This is because when the baby is developing, it helps form their neural tubes.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s especially important as it can help prevent some major birth defects such as brain and spine issues, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/ncbddd\/folicacid\/about.html#:~:text=Why%20folic%20acid%20is%20important,and%20spine%20(spina%20bifida).\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Center for Disease Control<\/a>\u00a0says.<\/p>\n<p>The NHS recommends you take:\u00a0400 micrograms\u00a0of folic acid every day \u2013 from before you\u2019re pregnant until you\u2019re 12 weeks pregnant.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re not pregnant, you should have 200 micrograms per day.<\/p>\n<p>A paper penned in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/31401653\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2019<\/a>\u00a0found a link between folic acid supplements and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/topic\/bowel-cancer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">colorectal cancer<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>People who took folic acid and b12 pills were found to be at a 21 per cent higher risk of cancer.<\/p>\n<p>The experts found that 38 per cent of those studied were at an increased risk of dying from the illness.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s important to note this was a trial of just 1,021 people, all diagnosed with colorectal cancer.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/embed-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/embed-2.jpg\" alt=\"While supplements can be useful, studies have shown there are some pills that could in fact increase your risk of cancer.\" class=\"wp-image-22026735\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/embed-2.jpg?quality=75&#038;strip=all&#038;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/embed-2.jpg?quality=75&#038;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/embed-2.jpg?quality=75&#038;strip=all&#038;w=512 512w\" \/><\/a><figcaption>While supplements can be useful, studies have shown there are some pills that could in fact increase your risk of cancer.<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Shutterstock<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 id=\"4-vitamin-e\">4. Vitamin E<\/h2>\n<p>It\u2019s easy to get enough vitamin E through the likes of peanuts, almonds, spinach and peppers.<\/p>\n<p>The NHS says you need 4mg a\u00a0day\u00a0for men and 3mg a\u00a0day\u00a0for women.<\/p>\n<p>A study\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3502042\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">published in 2012<\/a>\u00a0found that supplementing your diet with vitamin E could increase the risk of prostate cancer in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/health\/mens-health-and-fitness\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">healthy men<\/a>\u00a0though.<\/p>\n<p>This was specific to vitamin E with high doses of \u03b1-tocopherol, which is a type of vitamin E with the number E307.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s important to note that people who have cancer often take supplements.<\/p>\n<p>Experts at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancerresearchuk.org\/about-cancer\/cancer-in-general\/treatment\/complementary-alternative-therapies\/individual-therapies\/vitamins-diet-supplements\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cancer Research UK<\/a>\u00a0explained: \u201cYou might need to have dietary supplements if you have low levels of certain nutrients.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome hormone treatments for breast and prostate cancer can weaken your bones.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo your doctor might prescribe calcium and Vitamin D to protect your bones.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They added that some cancers can stop you from easily absorbing nutrients from food \u2013 so your doctor might prescribe a\u00a0daily multivitamin and\u00a0mineral supplement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost people use supplements alongside their cancer treatments, such as radiotherapy or chemotherapy.
