I hereby hold you in civil contempt,\u201d Engoron said, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us\/new-york-judge-hears-arguments-whether-hold-trump-contempt-2022-04-25\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to<\/a> Reuters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn particular there is no admissible evidence of who, what, where, when and how any search was conducted,\u201d Engoron <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/04\/25\/trump-held-in-contempt-faces-10k-per-day-fine-in-new-york-ags-probe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">added<\/a>, noting that Trump\u2019s actions were insufficient.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThus Mr. Trump didn\u2019t comply,\u201d the judge said.<\/p>\n<p>Failure to pay the daily fine could result in jail time under state law, though the move would be unlikely in Trump\u2019s case.<\/p>\n<p>New York Attorney General Letitia James shared her response regarding the ruling, stating her investigation was not politically motivated as Trump has previously claimed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday, justice prevailed,\u201d James said, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/judge-holds-donald-trump-in-contempt-imposes-sanctions-for-noncompliance-in-new-york-probe-11650905567\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to<\/a> the Wall Street Journal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor years, Donald Trump has tried to evade the law and stop our lawful investigation into him and his company\u2019s financial dealings,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>James also took to Twitter to declare victory following the ruling.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn a major victory, a court has ruled in our favor to hold Donald Trump in contempt of court,\u201d she tweeted.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/BREAKING?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#BREAKING<\/a>: In a major victory, a court has ruled in our favor to hold Donald Trump in contempt of court.<\/p>\n<p>Donald Trump must pay $10,000 per day for every day that he continues to defy the court&#8217;s order to turn over documents to my office. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/AFAPPrnce4\">https:\/\/t.co\/AFAPPrnce4<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 NY AG James (@NewYorkStateAG) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NewYorkStateAG\/status\/1518631127040278529?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 25, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The Trump Organization has reported that it has submitted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/donald-trump\/ny-judge-holds-trump-contempt-produce-documents-attorney-general-probe-rcna25875\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">more than 750,000 documents<\/a> to the attorney general. However, the ruling follows complaints by James\u2019 office that complained the company has still not handed over items personally involving the former president that it considers essential to its investigation.<\/p>\n<p>Trump lawyer Alina Habba <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/national-security\/2022\/04\/25\/trump-held-contempt-james\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> during the hearing that Trump \u201cis an honest person, much to the dismay of certain people in this room.\u201d Habba has also previously stated she would appeal any contempt ruling.<\/p>\n<p>The ruling reaches back to an investigation by James <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2019\/03\/12\/letitia-james-subpoenas-banks-for-trump-organization-records\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in 2019<\/a> after former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen claimed during congressional testimony that the former president exaggerated company financial details for advantages on taxes and loans.<\/p>\n<p>James\u2019 office filed a legal challenge in 2020 against the Trump Organization and Trump\u2019s son Eric Trump over allegations that the company was refusing to comply with the investigation.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement from Trump earlier this month, he blasted the investigation, writing, \u201cThis is just a continuation of the greatest Witch Hunt of all time, by a failed Attorney General\u2026I\u2019ve been investigated by the Democrats more than Billy the Kid, Jesse James, and Al Capone, combined.
