Agresti<\/span><br \/><span>April 25, 2022<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/covid_killer.png\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Near the top of its home page, the New York Times has published an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/04\/21\/opinion\/superspreader-events-disinfect-air.html\">essay<\/a> by three professors about a \u201chighly effective\u201d technology to prevent the spread of Covid-19 in \u201chigh-risk environments\u201d like nursing homes and places prone to \u201csuperspreader events.\u201d Based on more than 500 hours of research, the institute <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justfacts.com\/\">Just Facts<\/a> identified the same technology in September 2021 and promoted it to scholars, public officials, journalists, and commentators. However, most of them ignored the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justfacts.com\/news_face_masks_deadly_falsehoods#ultraviolet\">research<\/a> while big tech suppressed it, thus costing countless lives.<\/p>\n<p>The technology, called ultraviolet air disinfection, has been proven to stop the spread of contagious respiratory diseases in settings like schools and hospitals for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justfacts.com\/news_face_masks_deadly_falsehoods#ultraviolet\">more than 80 years<\/a>. It is so effective that when it was used in a wing of a California VA hospital during the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atsjournals.org\/doi\/abs\/10.1164\/arrd.1961.83.2P2.29\">Asian influenza epidemic<\/a> of 1958\u2014not a single patient caught the disease. In contrast, the epidemic struck the other wing of the same hospital \u201cwith explosive force,\u201d producing a \u201csevere, prostrating illness\u201d among 19% of the patients.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/04\/21\/opinion\/superspreader-events-disinfect-air.html\">professors<\/a> who wrote the Times essay were well-qualified to analyze this issue, as they specialize in \u201cenvironmental health and how to prevent the airborne transmission of diseases like Covid.\u201d They include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/sph.umd.edu\/people\/donald-milton\">Donald K. Milton<\/a>, a professor of environmental and occupational health at the University of Maryland School of Public Health.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hsph.harvard.edu\/edward-nardell\/\">Edward A. Nardell<\/a>, a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/covid19commission.org\/david-michaels\">David Michaels<\/a>, a professor of environmental and occupational health at George Washington University, and a former OSHA official.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The scholars emphasize that ultraviolet air disinfection \u201ccan end large superspreader events and make public events and dining safer for everyone\u201d and then finish their essay by asking, \u201cWhat are we waiting for?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The answer to that rhetorical question is appalling and contains broad lessons that can prevent an enormous amount of harm from Covid-19 and other scourges going forward.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How It Works<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ultraviolet (UV) light is an invisible part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashrae.org\/file%20library\/technical%20resources\/covid-19\/i-p_a19_ch62_uvairandsurfacetreatment.pdf\">energy spectrum<\/a> emitted by the sun, and it can also be generated by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2789813\/\">lamps<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justfacts.com\/news_face_masks_deadly_falsehoods#ultraviolet\">Multiple studies<\/a> have found that it proficiently kills airborne microbes, thus preventing the spread of contagious respiratory diseases. These lamps can be deployed in several ways, each with pros and cons.<\/p>\n<p>The most successful <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justfacts.com\/news_face_masks_deadly_falsehoods#ultraviolet\">studies<\/a> of UV disinfection systems have been conducted with \u201cupper room\u201d UV. This involves installing UV lamps above people\u2019s heads so that the UV light can\u2019t enter their eyes. Although invisible, the type of UV used for such systems can cause eye pain after hours of direct exposure, which doesn\u2019t occur if the light stays above their heads. When used with fans to increase circulation, upper room UV systems can disinfect the air in a room at very high rates of <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/25928547\/\">57<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/aje\/article-abstract\/35\/1\/97\/85502\">100<\/a> times per hour.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, the professors <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/04\/21\/opinion\/superspreader-events-disinfect-air.html\">assert<\/a> there are \u201cnewer, commercially available\u201d UV systems which \u201cdo not irritate the eyes\u201d and \u201ccan be used safely at lower areas of a room and can directly disinfect the air between people sitting at a dinner table.\u201d However, they don\u2019t document this claim.<\/p>\n<p>Another option is \u201cin-duct\u201d devices that use UV to disinfect air as it passes through heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. <a href=\"https:\/\/nepis.epa.gov\/Exe\/ZyNET.exe\/P1005TTP.TXT?ZyActionD=ZyDocument&#038;Client=EPA&#038;Index=2006+Thru+2010&#038;Docs=&#038;Query=&#038;Time=&#038;EndTime=&#038;SearchMethod=1&#038;TocRestrict=n&#038;Toc=&#038;TocEntry=&#038;QField=&#038;QFieldYear=&#038;QFieldMonth=&#038;QFieldDay=&#038;IntQFieldOp=0&#038;ExtQFieldOp=0&#038;XmlQuery=&#038;File=D%3A%5Czyfiles%5CIndex%20Data%5C06thru10%5CTxt%5C00000012%5CP1005TTP.txt&#038;User=ANONYMOUS&#038;Password=anonymous&#038;SortMethod=h%7C-&#038;MaximumDocuments=1&#038;FuzzyDegree=0&#038;ImageQuality=r75g8\/r75g8\/x150y150g16\/i425&#038;Display=hpfr&#038;DefSeekPage=x&#038;SearchBack=ZyActionL&#038;Back=ZyActionS&#038;BackDesc=Results%20page&#038;MaximumPages=1&#038;ZyEntry=1&#038;SeekPage=x&#038;ZyPURL\">Lab<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lrc.rpi.edu\/researchAreas\/pdf\/FieldEvaluationUVGIReport.pdf\">field<\/a> studies have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osti.gov\/servlets\/purl\/807360\">repeatedly<\/a> found that these systems kill the vast bulk of airborne microbes that flow through them, but their air turnover rates are typically much lower than upper room UV systems. For example, the HVAC air turnover rates in the Washington State Convention Center range from <a href=\"https:\/\/seattleconventioncenter.com\/media\/369\/download\">5.9 to 20.1<\/a> times per hour, which is 65% to 94% lower than upper room UV.<\/p>\n<p>With regard to costs, adding in-duct UV to buildings that already have HVAC systems is much less expensive to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashrae.org\/file%20library\/technical%20resources\/covid-19\/i-p_a19_ch62_uvairandsurfacetreatment.pdf#page=10\">install and operate<\/a> than upper room UV. On the other hand, upper room systems are more economical than installing a complete HVAC system. Likewise, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/04\/21\/opinion\/superspreader-events-disinfect-air.html\">professors<\/a> write that \u201cthe initial costs for equipment and installation of a highly effective\u201d new direct UV system \u201ccan often be cheaper than upgrading or replacing ventilation systems.\u201d They also say that these systems use \u201cfar less electricity than ventilation and filtration.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ajph.aphapublications.org\/doi\/10.2105\/AJPH.39.10.1321\">Some<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/aje\/article-abstract\/40\/2\/136\/111217\">studies<\/a> have failed to find benefits from upper room UV, but as explained in a 2010 paper in the journal <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2789813\/\">Public Health Reports<\/a><\/em>, they were conducted in situations where there was \u201ca high risk of acquiring the same infection outside the location where\u201d the UV was deployed, such as school buses. This is not an issue for places like hospitals and nursing homes, where UV lights can be installed wherever the patients and residents may be.<\/p>\n<p>The bottom line is that well-designed UV systems are incredibly effective at stopping the spread of Covid-19 because they kill SARS-CoV-2 virions instead of merely trying to block them.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why Governments Missed It For So Long<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>During the first year of the C-19 pandemic, the World Health Organization, the CDC, and numerous public health officials <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justfacts.com\/news_face_masks_deadly_falsehoods#laboratory\">assumed<\/a> that Covid is mainly spread by large respiratory droplets generated by talking, coughing, and sneezing. For a prime example, the World Health Organization <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/who\/status\/1243972193169616898\">published<\/a> a \u201cfact check\u201d in March 2020 declaring without evidence that \u201c<strong>Covid-19 is NOT airborne<\/strong>\u201d and \u201cis mainly transmitted through droplets\u201d that \u201care too heavy to hang in the air\u201d:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/who_claims_covid-19_not_airborne.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-10336\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/who_claims_covid-19_not_airborne.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"614\" height=\"307\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/who_claims_covid-19_not_airborne.png 614w, https:\/\/www.justfactsdaily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/who_claims_covid-19_not_airborne-300x150.png 300w\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If WHO were correct, upper room and in-duct UV systems would be useless because the droplets would never enter the spaces where the UV light is located. Even direct UV systems would be ineffective because it only takes a second or two for a droplet to travel through the air from one person to another, leaving little time for the UV to penetrate the saliva and kill the virions in it.<\/p>\n<p>In reality, however, at least <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justfacts.com\/news_face_masks_deadly_falsehoods#laboratory\">20 studies and analyses<\/a> in science journals have shown that Covid-19 and other contagious respiratory diseases are mainly spread by microscopic respiratory vapors called \u201cairborne particles\u201d or \u201caerosols.\u201d Like droplets, aerosols are generated by talking, coughing, and sneezing\u2014but unlike droplets\u2014they are also generated by simple breathing and are small and light enough to stay airborne for minutes to hours. Thus, they easily <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justfacts.com\/news_face_masks_deadly_falsehoods#gold\">penetrate or circumvent<\/a> most masks, spittle barriers, and other measures claimed to block the spread of the virus.<\/p>\n<p>UV air disinfection, on the other hand, is ideal for killing aerosols precisely because they are airborne. Hence, they are drawn into HVAC systems and circulate into the kill zones of upper room UV systems.<\/p>\n<p>Highlighting the prevalence and deadly potential of claims that C-19 is mainly spread by droplets instead of aerosols, 14 authors of a June 2020 paper in the journal <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S016041202031254X\">Environment International<\/a><\/em>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>lamented that \u201cno countries or authorities consider airborne spread of Covid-19 in their regulations to prevent infections transmission indoors.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>stressed that \u201cthis failure to immediately recognize and acknowledge the importance of airborne transmission and to take adequate actions against it will result in additional\u201d C-19 infections.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Six months later in November 2020, the journal <em><a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/cid\/article\/71\/9\/2311\/5867798\">Clinical Infectious Diseases<\/a><\/em> published a statement signed by 239 scientists documenting \u201cmore than enough supporting evidence\u201d that C-19 could be spreading via aerosols. These scientists also:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>stressed that \u201cmost public health organizations, including the World Health Organization,\u201d have not come to grips with these facts.<\/li>\n<li>appealed to \u201cthe medical community and to the relevant national and international bodies to recognize\u201d this reality and take measures to deal with it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Detailed documentation of how public officials came to believe the droplet theory while rejecting the reality of aerosols is available in Just Facts\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justfacts.com\/news_face_masks_deadly_falsehoods#laboratory\">September 2021 research<\/a> on this issue. While disturbing, it pales in comparison to what officials did after they realized they were wrong.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Cover-Up<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After more than a year of downplaying and denying the threat of aerosol transmission, the CDC and WHO changed their websites in the spring of 2021 to admit that aerosols play a major role in the spread of C-19. But instead of announcing they were mistaken about this life-or-death matter, they silently altered their webpages on how Covid spreads. The CDC also deleted a statement that exposed the fatal consequences of their fecklessness. This cover-up has allowed countless preventable deaths to continue to the present day.<\/p>\n<p>Those sordid actions began on <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210430200806\/https:\/www.who.int\/news-room\/q-a-detail\/coronavirus-disease-covid-19-how-is-it-transmitted\">April 30, 2021<\/a> when the World Health Organization changed its webpage about how <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210429221836\/https:\/www.who.int\/news-room\/q-a-detail\/coronavirus-disease-covid-19-how-is-it-transmitted\">Covid-19 is transmitted<\/a> by:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>deleting this claim: \u201cCurrent evidence suggests that the main way the virus spreads is by respiratory droplets among people who are in close contact with each other.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>adding this statement: \u201cA person can be infected when aerosols or droplets containing the virus are inhaled or come directly into contact with the eyes, nose, or mouth.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>One week later on <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210507222748\/https:\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/prevent-getting-sick\/how-covid-spreads.html\">May 7, 2021<\/a>, the CDC changed its webpage on \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210506071720\/https:\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/prevent-getting-sick\/how-covid-spreads.html\">How COVID-19 Spreads<\/a>\u201c by:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>deleting this claim: Covid-19 \u201cinfections occur mainly through exposure to respiratory droplets when a person is in close contact with someone who has Covid-19.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>adding this statement: \u201cCovid-19 spreads when an infected person breathes out droplets and very small particles that contain the virus.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Both agencies quietly made those changes as if they had no import. However, epidemiologists knew full well they had deadly implications. For example, Mary-Louise McLaws, an epidemiologist and member of WHO\u2019s Covid-19 infection control committee, told the New York Times in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/07\/04\/health\/239-experts-with-one-big-claim-the-coronavirus-is-airborne.html\">July 2020<\/a> that she was \u201cfrustrated\u201d by WHO\u2019s stubbornness on the issue of aerosols and wanted them to revisit it. She also stressed that a change in WHO\u2019s position \u201cwill cause an enormous shudder through the infection control society\u201d and that \u201cwe would have to be prepared to change a lot of what we do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The CDC clearly knew that\u2014for on the same day it changed its webpage on how C-19 spreads\u2014it <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210507222748\/https:\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/prevent-getting-sick\/how-covid-spreads.html\">deleted<\/a> from the <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210506071720\/https:\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/prevent-getting-sick\/how-covid-spreads.html\">webpage<\/a> a statement which reveals the lethal harm caused by their misinformation. Explaining what must change if Covid is airborne, the webpage stated, \u201cPathogens that are spread easily through airborne transmission require the use of special engineering controls to prevent infections,\u201d an apt description for ultraviolet air disinfection.<\/p>\n<p>On that <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210101000000*\/https:\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/science\/science-briefs\/sars-cov-2-transmission.html\">same day<\/a>, the CDC made another blatant attempt to cover its tracks. It did this by creating a \u201cScientific Brief\u201d titled \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210907133746\/https:\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/science\/science-briefs\/sars-cov-2-transmission.html\">SARS-CoV-2 Transmission<\/a>\u201d which claims, \u201cAlthough how we understand transmission occurs has shifted, the ways to prevent infection with this virus have not.\u201d This directly conflicts with the CDC\u2019s statement that special engineering controls are needed to control the spread of airborne pathogens. Again, the CDC deleted that statement on the very same day it admitted that aerosols play a major role in the spread of C-19.<\/p>\n<p>The CDC was aware of UV air disinfection technology but <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210908100029\/https:\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/community\/ventilation.html\">relegated<\/a> it to a \u201csupplemental treatment\u201d when \u201coptions for increasing room ventilation and filtration are limited.\u201d Meanwhile, a note at the top of the same webpage and <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210908003125\/https:\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/symptoms-testing\/symptoms.html\">others<\/a> on cdc.gov instructed people to \u201cwear a mask indoors in public if you are in <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210908092903\/https:\/covid.cdc.gov\/covid-data-tracker\/#county-view\">an area of substantial or high transmission<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So instead of changing \u201ca lot of what we do,\u201d the CDC and WHO kept advising people to use the same droplet-based measures (like masks) which perform poorly against aerosols and ignore the ones that work well.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Culpability of Media and Big Tech<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Covid-19 pandemic has also been a pandemic of misinformation in which the people who run influential institutions like the CDC and WHO repeatedly promulgated deadly fictions. In turn, media outlets and big tech companies spread them to the world. Beyond issues like droplets, aerosols, masks, and UV\u2014public health officials have botched vitally important matters like:<\/p>\n<p>Despite that atrocious track record, the executives of companies like <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20200521042253\/https:\/support.google.com\/youtube\/answer\/9891785\">Google\/YouTube<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210705001750\/https:\/m.facebook.com\/help\/230764881494641\/\">Facebook<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20220421204242\/https:\/help.twitter.com\/en\/rules-and-policies\/medical-misinformation-policy\">Twitter<\/a> made these purveyors of misinformation the arbiters of truth on their platforms.<\/p>\n<p>In vivid contrast, Just Facts <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justfactsdaily.com\/?s=Covid-19\">consistently published<\/a> verifiable facts that refuted those falsehoods, and a cross-disciplinary array of Ph.D.\u2019s complemented, shared, and cited Just Facts\u2019 research. Yet with callous disregard for actual facts\u2014and thus the wellbeing of people\u2014big tech corporations shadow banned and censored these facts while many media outlets ignored them.<\/p>\n<p>All of this created a torrent of misinformation that contributed to the adoption of policies that will have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justfacts.com\/news_covid-19_essential_facts#overreactions\">devastating effects<\/a> for decades to come.
