And the military has begun doing the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defenseone.com\/technology\/2021\/10\/how-well-can-ai-pick-targets-satellite-photos-army-test-aims-find-out\/185916\/\">same with satellite photos.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Allen said military AI has come a long way since 2017, when the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.govexec.com\/media\/gbc\/docs\/pdfs_edit\/establishment_of_the_awcft_project_maven.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">public learned<\/a> of Project Maven, the military\u2019s object recognition program.,\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArtificial intelligence [and] machine learning has become an increasingly capable and increasingly widespread factor in United States intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance operations,\u201d he said. It\u2019s been quite useful for tracking what\u2019s going on in Ukraine. \u201cThe United States Department of Defense and our allies are taking advantage of what&#8217;s been built over the past five years.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In other words, applying advanced AI tools to publicly available imagery is producing critical information to help the Ukrainian military thwart Russian attacks.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This war\u2019s data will help the military better model and anticipate how an advanced adversary will behave in the real world, particularly Russia and China. It\u2019s something that military leaders have said needs to start happening <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defenseone.com\/technology\/2021\/06\/its-time-wargame-against-ai-enabled-china\/174922\/\">now.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Holiday said he was working on that with the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.niwcpacific.navy.mil\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0 Naval Information Warfare Center, Pacific<\/a>, in San Diego, California. The Center\u2019s Battlespace Exploitation of Mixed Reality Lab is seeking to understand how rapidly advancing technology will shape adversary behavior.
