The mangled bodies were later found in a Central Islip park.<\/p>\n<p>The murders prompted former President Trump and former Attorney General Jeff Sessions to visit Long Island, spotlighting the criminal effects of lax immigration and unvetted \u201copen borders.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With spring approaching, the Department of Homeland Security anticipates a surge in border encounters, <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/04\/15\/7-more-house-democrats-can-help-stop-the-looming-border-catastrophe\/\">predicting <\/a>18,000 migrants a day, not including those DHS doesn\u2019t encounter. Some fear migrants will not be properly vetted, allowing criminals, including gang members, into the country.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/omb\/briefing-room\/2022\/03\/28\/fact-sheet-the-presidents-budget-for-fiscal-year-2023\/\">Biden administration plans<\/a> to reduce the number of detention center beds by 9,000. If the current administration does not start enforcing the \u201cremain in Mexico\u201d policy, formally known as Migrant Protection Protocols, those individuals may not be properly vetted and accounted for.\u00a0 To add to the mix, Title 42, a Trump administration public health and welfare law that restricts immigration during health emergencies is currently set to end on May 23.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fairus.org\/staff\/ira-mehlman\">Ira Mehlman<\/a>, media director at the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR), said Title 42 is essentially all that remains of U.S. border security. In President Biden\u2019s first year, almost <a href=\"https:\/\/cis.org\/Arthur\/CBP-Encounters-Southwest-Border-Rose-February\">2.2 million migrants were apprehended<\/a>, with 63 percent being Title 42 expulsions.<\/p>\n<p>In February, \u201c55 percent of those who were apprehended coming across the border illegally were returned to Mexico under Title 42,\u201d Mehlman told me. \u201cThere are also a lot of people who are simply coming through and not being apprehended, and we know even less about those people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mehlman said DHS <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dhs.gov\/news\/2021\/09\/30\/secretary-mayorkas-announces-new-immigration-enforcement-priorities\">Secretary Alejandro<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dhs.gov\/news\/2021\/09\/30\/secretary-mayorkas-announces-new-immigration-enforcement-priorities\">Mayorkas placed restrictions<\/a> on ICE enforcement, noting the specificity of enforcement precluding certain offenders and locations.<\/p>\n<p>Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney expressed similar concerns, like that of the vetting of migrants. \u201cThere is virtually no vetting, and there really can\u2019t be any vetting because these individuals are just that, undocumented,\u201d Tierney told me in an interview. <\/p>\n<p>The first-year district attorney who has prosecuted more than 50 homicides involving hundreds of MS-13 defendants said gangs have a firmer grasp of the immigration system, working in conjunction with coyotes. \u201cYou have a whole bunch of individuals, including a large number of gang members coming through the borders because there are established MS-13 gangs here,\u201d Tierney said, noting the different cliques and their territories.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Carleton [clique] is a bastardization of Carlton Avenue in Central Islip,\u201d said Mr. Tierney, referring to Central Islip as \u201cground zero for MS-13.\u201d MS-13 gang violence thrives \u201cwhere rivals exist,\u201d he said, which goes along with the gang\u2019s philosophy of using murder as a currency and \u201cdisrespect\u201d as a means to target.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He said the Biden administration \u201centices gang members\u201d to enter illegally, contributing to the violence and the opioid crisis in Suffolk County. \u201cYou\u2019re dumping these people on these underserved communities, and you\u2019re not providing a commensurate amount of money for these communities to support these new arrivals,\u201d said the Suffolk County DA.<\/p>\n<p>President Biden intends to speed up the immigration court proceedings with an additional 100 justices and $6.3 billion allocated for refugee resettlement. At least 12 million illegal immigrants already inhabit the United States, or nearly 4 percent of the nation\u2019s population.<\/p>\n<p>Almost <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/opa\/pr\/department-justice-releases-report-its-efforts-disrupt-dismantle-and-destroy-ms-13\">30 percent of ICE immigrant detainees have criminal records<\/a>, with more than 20,000 in detention facilities. Within that subset, MS-13 operates with 10,000 members under various banners or \u201ccliques\u201d across the US. 749 gang members were convicted during the Trump administration, with 74 percent being undocumented migrants.<\/p>\n<p>Lax enforcement of existing immigration policy may not be a unique experience for Long Island. Unfettered immigration is not only a contributor to gang crime but also a strain on state and local resources.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n<div class=\"article-author-description fst-italic\">\n  Brian J.
