The prisoner has previously had their request for the operation denied by the BOP.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/nbc-out\/out-news\/federal-court-orders-first-gender-affirming-surgery-trans-prisoner-rcna25377\">NBC News reported<\/a> Thursday that a federal District Court judge ordered the Bureau to conduct a \u201cnationwide search for a qualified surgeon to perform the surgery for the inmate, Cristina Nichole Iglesias,\u201d who is a male transitioning to live as a woman.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Iglesias\u2019 legal representative, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), provided a statement to NBC regarding the judge\u2019s order this week.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cI am hopeful that I will finally get the care I need to live my life fully as the woman I am,\u201d Iglesias&#8217; statement provided by the ACLU read. \u201cBOP has denied me gender-affirming surgery for years \u2014 and keeps raising new excuses and putting new obstacles in my way. I am grateful that the court recognized the urgency of my case and ordered BOP to act.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aclu-il.org\/en\/press-releases\/federal-court-orders-bureau-prisons-schedule-first-ever-gender-affirming-surgery\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">press release<\/a> from ACLU Illinois said that Chief Judge Nancy Rosenstengel ordered the BOP to compile weekly reports to the court displaying a timeline to ensure Iglesias gets the surgery and recovers before the end of the year. Iglesias&#8217; sentence ends in December 2022.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">In February, I <a href=\"https:\/\/townhall.com\/tipsheet\/madelineleesman\/2022\/02\/01\/federal-officials-deny-biological-male-inmates-request-for-gender-affirming-surg-n2602674\">reported<\/a> for Townhall how the BOP denied Iglesias\u2019 request for \u201cgender-affirming\u201d surgery.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The Dallas Morning News <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/courts\/2022\/01\/04\/transgender-prisoner-in-texas-could-become-first-to-receive-gender-affirming-surgery\/\">noted<\/a> that Iglesias, who has been imprisoned since 1994, is serving a lengthy sentence for threatening to use a weapon of mass destruction against the British government.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn January, the Biden administration restored Obama-era <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bop.gov\/policy\/progstat\/5200-08-cn-1.pdf\">guidelines\u00a0<\/a>for federal prisons to house transgender inmates by their gender identity &#8216;when appropriate.&#8217; The guidelines also require prison staff to refer to trans inmates by their lived name and pronouns,\u201d NBC included in their\u00a0report.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For the first time, the Federal Bureau of Prisons has been ordered to secure \u201cgender-affirming\u201d surgery for a transgender prisoner.
