Maggie Hassan is in deep trouble. She\u2019s running for re-election in a very Republican year and has now run afoul of the open-borders wing of her party by opposing Joe Biden\u2019s plan to rescind the pandemic immigration rule, Title 42.<\/p>\n<p>Republicans are having a gay old time with Hassan. Her state borders Canada, but she visited the Southern border to advocate for more border security. They mocked her as \u201cMAGA Maggie\u201d and questioned her commitment to border security.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, I don\u2019t think you\u2019ll see many Maggie Hassan posters on the walls of the Democratic Latino Caucus headquarters as all of them resigned from their party leadership posts and explained why in an <a href=\"https:\/\/acrobat.adobe.com\/link\/track?uri=urn%3Aaaid%3Ascds%3AUS%3A67fd078f-00fe-3a27-badd-3f9127df249b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">angry letter<\/a> that accused Hassan of (gasp!) acting like a Republican.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2022\/04\/24\/swing-state-senate-dems-border-visit-enrages-left-00027355\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Politico:<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s back in election mode, so she\u2019s going to out-Republican the Republicans on the border. Is she disappointing? Absolutely,\u201d said Arnie Arnesen, a former Democratic gubernatorial candidate and liberal radio talk show host.\u00a0\u201cI don\u2019t think she\u2019ll get one more vote for what she\u2019s doing\u2026 I think it\u2019s foolish, but we will be voting for Maggie, not because of Maggie but because we believe in democracy and she won\u2019t vote for Mitch McConnell.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Immigration isn\u2019t necessarily a top-of-mind issue in New Hampshire, according to several Democratic strategists and leaders. Andrew Smith, director of the University of New Hampshire Survey Center, said there isn\u2019t any recent polling on immigration views in the state, but that the public\u2019s view on Title 42 right now is \u201cnot likely to impact many votes in November.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Hassan\u2019s problems are growing by the week. When Republican Gov. Chris Sununu declined to run for the Senate, Hassan appeared to have a clear path to victory.<\/p>\n<p>But the polls are telling a different story.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/opinion\/new-hampshires-third-string-republicans-are-giving-maggie-hassan-a-run-for-her-money\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Washington Examiner<\/em>:<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>A\u00a0<a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/scholars.unh.edu\/cgi\/viewcontent.cgi?article=1692&#038;context=survey_center_polls\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">poll<\/a>\u00a0from the University of\u00a0<a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/new-hampshire\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New Hampshire<\/a>\u00a0has Hassan in a statistical tie with nearly all of her possible Republican opponents. Retired Gen. Don Bolduc and Londonderry Town Manager Kevin Smith each trail Hassan by just 1 percentage point. Chuck Morse leads Hassan by 2 points.<\/p>\n<p>Although he is president of the New Hampshire state Senate, 54% of New Hampshire residents don\u2019t know enough about Morse to form an opinion about him. And 73% say the same about Smith. Yet they are both neck-and-neck with an incumbent U.S. senator.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Democrats were counting on Hassan to bolster their chances of keeping control of the Senate. Instead, she may lose to a second-string Republican that few in New Hampshire can identify.<\/p>\n<p>Hassan won her Senate seat by less than a thousand votes in 2016.
