The filing comes after Sherri pleaded guilty to charges relating to the hoax.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow that I have learned the truth as reflected in the plea agreement that she has made with the U.S. Attorney\u2019s office in Sacramento, I must act decisively to protect my children from the trauma caused by their mother and bring stability and calm to their lives,\u201d Keith wrote in court documents, according to the Bee. \u201cBoth I and especially our children were traumatized by her disappearance, and I spent much time and money trying to find my wife.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe trauma inflicted on our children at the unexpected loss of their mother was heartbreaking,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>As recently as last month, after Sherri was arrested for the kidnapping hoax, she claimed she was a victim and told her children the arrest was a mistake, Keith wrote in his affidavit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe fact that their mother lied to them on such a major issue is something they and I are having a hard time dealing with,\u201d Keith wrote. \u201cI do not believe she is in a position to provide good parenting and it would be inconceivable to thrust the children into that chaotic situation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Keith further requested that he be allowed to decide when Sherri can see the children.<\/p>\n<p>Sherri pleaded guilty lying to a federal officer and mail fraud, The Daily Wire <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/sherri-papini-pleads-guilty-to-2016-kidnapping-hoax\">reported<\/a>, and released a statement expressing remorse for her crimes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am deeply ashamed of myself for my behavior and so sorry for the pain I\u2019ve caused my family, my friends, all the good people who needlessly suffered because of my story and those who worked so hard to try to help me,\u201d Papini said in a statement released through her attorney, William Portanova,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/crime\/sherri-papini-guilty-plea-kidnapping-hoax\/?utm_source=facebook&#038;utm_medium=news_tab\">according to People<\/a>. \u201cI will work the rest of my life to make amends for what I have done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As The Daily Wire previously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/sherri-papini-claimed-she-was-kidnapped-at-gunpoint-and-branded-police-say-she-made-it-up\">reported<\/a>, for three weeks in November 2016, the nation believed Papini had been kidnapped, prompting a nationwide search involving the FBI. Papini, 39, faked the entire kidnapping and spent the time at an ex-boyfriend\u2019s house, police said in March. Police also announced at that time that Papini had been presented with evidence that she had faked the kidnapping and defrauded California out of more than $30,000 in victim assistance, NBC News\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/california-woman-sherri-papini-made-2016-abduction-officials-say-rcna18682?utm_source=facebook&#038;utm_medium=news_tab\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Three weeks after Papini disappeared, she was found on the side of a Yolo County freeway with a chain around her waist and a \u201cbrand\u201d on her shoulder, which she claimed had been put on her by her kidnappers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn truth, Papini had been voluntarily staying with a former boyfriend in Costa Mesa and had harmed herself to support her false statements,\u201d the U.S. attorney\u2019s office said in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/usao-edca\/pr\/shasta-county-woman-arrested-lying-federal-agents-regarding-kidnapping-and-defrauding\">a press release<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Papini originally told investigators that two Hispanic women kept her captive at gunpoint, and even worked with an FBI sketch artist to come up with images of the two women, which police used to search for them. It was DNA from her clothing that ultimately unraveled her story. DNA had been collected and put into a database that was routinely checked, NBC reported. It was this DNA that led to Papini\u2019s ex-boyfriend.<\/p>\n<p>When questioned, the ex-boyfriend, who has not been charged and thus has not been named, told investigators that Papini had told him she needed help and to get away, so he agreed to pick her up in Redding, California, and let her stay with him the entire time she was missing, according to FBI documents. The ex-boyfriend told investigators he didn\u2019t know what Papini\u2019s \u201cfinal plan was\u201d or if the situation meant they were getting back together.<\/p>\n<p>The ex also said that Papini asked him to brand her using a wood-burning tool and eventually asked him to drive her back to Northern California.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInvestigators say the ex-boyfriend\u2019s story was corroborated with car rental receipts and phone records, and the ex-boyfriend knew details not known to the public,\u201d NBC reported. \u201cThe ex-boyfriend told investigators he initially thought he was just helping a friend, but after seeing the news about the later kidnapping claims he got worried, according to the affidavit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The ex-boyfriend did not contact authorities when he learned about the fake kidnappings, but told investigators that he planned to cooperate when they eventually came looking for him.<\/p>\n<p>Papini was interviewed again in August 2020, nearly four years after her disappearance, but again claimed she had been kidnapped by two women with a gun.
