Indeed, this is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.19fortyfive.com\/2022\/04\/putin-has-a-problem-nato-is-sending-artillery-and-tanks-to-ukraine\/\">worst period<\/a> between Moscow and the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.19fortyfive.com\/2022\/04\/russias-invasion-of-ukraine-has-backfired-sweden-could-now-join-nato\/\"> transatlantic alliance<\/a> since the Cold War.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nationalinterest.org\/feature\/finland-and-sweden-would-make-nato-stronger-201951\"><span>NATO countries<\/span><\/a><span>\u00a0physically surround Ukraine, so it is natural and expected to have a certain degree of \u201ccontact\u201d between NATO and Russian aircraft.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Scrambling Against Russian Jets<\/b>\n<\/p>\n<p><span>As the clouds of war began building up over Ukraine, NATO started moving more aircraft in the region, including, F-16 Fighting Falcons,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.af.mil\/About-Us\/Fact-Sheets\/Display\/Article\/104499\/f-15e-strike-eagle\/\"><span>F-15 Strike Eagles<\/span><\/a><span>, Eurofighter Typhoons, and F-35A Lightning II fighter jets.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The NATO pilots began encountering Russian aircraft, especially around the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.19fortyfive.com\/2022\/04\/meet-the-moskva-how-ukraine-nearly-sank-russias-black-sea-flagship\/\">Black Sea<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cYou have more Russian aircraft flying around the Black Sea. We react to them anytime any Russian aircraft flies in the Black Sea. We need to be sure that we are there, ready, in front of them, just in case,\u201d Spanish Air Force Lieutenant General Fernando De La Cruz Caravaca, commander of the NATO Combined Air Operations Center, told\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcemag.com\/nato-scrambles-over-black-sea-highlight-russian-threat-to-the-alliance\/\"><span>Air Force Magazine<\/span><\/a><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.19fortyfive.com\/2022\/04\/5-reasons-the-f-35-is-the-best-fighter-on-earth-pictures\/\">presence<\/a> of the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sandboxx.us\/blog\/us-may-need-to-cut-f-35-order-to-afford-flying-the-stealth-fighter\/\"><span>F-35 stealth fighter jets<\/span><\/a><span>, in particular, significantly bolsters NATO air capabilities in the region.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p><span>On his part, British Air Chief Marshal Sir Michael Wigston to Air Force Magazine that NATO\u2019s air forces are the first line of defense against\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sandboxx.us\/blog\/the-new-russian-plan-for-ukraine-is-too-ambitious-for-its-own-good\/?preview_id=49079&#038;_thumbnail_id=49090\"><span>Russian aggression<\/span><\/a><span>, adding that he has no doubt that the Russian military is carefully watching how NATO reacts to the invasion of Ukraine.\u00a0<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWhen they take off from Crimea protecting their vessels on the Black Sea, they [Russian jets] might \u2026 fly over us. They might fly next to the boundaries and then turn back when they see us in the air. That gives a good indication that they can no longer move everywhere they want,\u201d Chief of Staff of the Italian Air Force Lieutenant General Luca Goretti told the Air Force Magazine.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p><span>When the ballistic missile cruiser Moskva, the flagship of the Russian Navy\u2019s Black Sea Fleet, sunk last week, NATO aircraft were able to monitor its movements until it went down to its watery grave.\u00a0<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p><span>We\u2019re executing 24\/7 CAPs [Combat Air Patrols] with all the NATO partners across the entire eastern front. In some cases, NATO aircraft help inform Western decision-makers about Russian movements.
