Version: 4.0.47--><div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/dw-wp-production.imgix.net\/2022\/04\/twitter-3.jpg?w=1200&#038;h=800&#038;ixlib=react-9.3.0\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\" alt=\"image\" \/><\/div>\n<p><span>Following proposed legislation in Canada that would give the government greater oversight and control over content on social media, Twitter has expressed opposition to the bill due to its effect on \u201cfreedom of expression.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In statements provided to the government, Twitter explained its objections to the proposal put forth by Liberals in parliament <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nationalpost.com\/news\/politics\/liberals-proposed-online-harms-bill-slammed-in-secret-submissions-from-tech-companies-telecoms\"><span>known<\/span><\/a><span> as the online harms bill.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nationalpost.com\/news\/politics\/liberals-proposed-online-harms-bill-slammed-in-secret-submissions-from-tech-companies-telecoms\"><span>According<\/span><\/a><span> to The National Post, \u201c<\/span><span>The online harms bill would take aim at online posts in five categories \u2014 terrorist content, content that incites violence, hate speech, intimate images shared non-consensually, and child sexual exploitation content.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Overseen by a new Digital Safety Commissioner of Canada, social media platforms would be required to take down posts that violate any of the content restrictions within 24 hours.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Twitter claims the bill does not have \u201cthe most basic procedural fairness requirements you might expect from a government-run system such as notice and warning.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Furthermore, the social media platform said the \u201crequirement to \u2018share\u2019 information at the request of the Crown is also deeply troubling.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Twitter, whose board is currently in a struggle with billionaire Elon Musk who wants to take control of the company, also expressed concern about the implications of free speech for the law.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The social media giant said that the proposed law \u201csacrifices freedom of expression to the creation of a government run system of surveillance of anyone who uses Twitter\u201d and warned that flagging and removing posts might be \u201cused as a political tactic.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Twitter, which barred the New York Post from its platform for several weeks prior to the 2020 U.S. presidential election after it published a story about Hunter Biden\u2019s laptop, also noted that the new regulations could have an impact on federal elections.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cAs lived during the recent Canadian federal election, a general approach to flagging will result in censorship,\u201d Twitter noted, pointing to Canadian politicians pushing to have posts removed for misinformation during the election cycle.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Regulating social media has become a major priority of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau\u2019s administration, as it <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/canadian-heritage\/campaigns\/harmful-online-content.html\"><span>says<\/span><\/a><span> it is important to ensure online safety for Canadians. An online resource from the government warns that social media platforms can be used to harm \u201csocial cohesion or democracy.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Other major companies, like Microsoft, also opposed the proposed law noting that it could impose too high of a burden on platforms to monitor and decide what content should be removed per the government\u2019s standards.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Microsoft claimed that the law could reverberate internationally if the legislation was implemented.
