A spokesperson for the Australian Government Department of Health (DOH) confirmed that the allegation is false.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><b>Fact Check:\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p>ATAGI is a group of vaccine experts that advise the Australian government on vaccine-related decisions, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/yes-theres-confusion-about-atagis-astrazeneca-advice-but-its-in-an-extremely-difficult-position-164633\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Conversation<\/a>. A post shared on Facebook claims it recently advocated vaccinating patients without their consent when they are sedated. The post includes an image featuring an alleged quote from the group that reads, \u201c<span>Vaccines may also be administered opportunistically while patients are undergoing sedation for unrelated procedures.\u201d<br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The alleged quote from the group is a genuine statement taken from an April 2022 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.gov.au\/resources\/publications\/atagi-advice-on-use-of-sedation-for-covid-19-vaccination?fbclid=IwAR1-6MDekU76jAUQpbfrRz2-fb1qn2FPJNo5wlgMHI06NrFx4tZtAMhP8DQ\"><span>ATAGI document<\/span><\/a> regarding the use of sedation for COVID-19 vaccination<span>. However, the statement has been taken out of context.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The document describes how sedation can be used to assist in the vaccination of people who have \u201canxiety disorders or needle-phobia\u201d in instances where \u201cnon-pharmacological techniques have failed.\u201d It also clearly states that consent is necessary for all vaccinations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInformed consent must be obtained prior to each dose from the patient themselves, or, where the patient does not have capacity to give consent, from the parent, guardian or substitute decision-maker,\u201d reads the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.gov.au\/resources\/publications\/atagi-advice-on-use-of-sedation-for-covid-19-vaccination?fbclid=IwAR1-6MDekU76jAUQpbfrRz2-fb1qn2FPJNo5wlgMHI06NrFx4tZtAMhP8DQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">document<\/a>. \u201cSedation should not be used as a measure to enforce compliance with vaccination requirements.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThere is no truth to the claim that doctors have permission to vaccinate a person under sedation without consent,\u201d said a representative from the Australian DOH in an email to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aap.com.au\/factcheck\/covid-vaccine-without-consent-claim-tries-to-sedate-the-truth\/\"><span>AAP Fact Check<\/span><\/a><span>.
