That two-part episode, \u201cWhen Texas Went After Transgender Care,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/04\/20\/podcasts\/the-daily\/transgender-teenagers-clinic-texas.html?action=click&#038;module=audio-series-bar&#038;region=header&#038;pgtype=Article\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">features<\/a> a lesbian mother and her biological daughter, Grayson, who is 17 and has attempted to become a male. <\/p>\n<p>Grayson recalls suffering from severe depression as a child but finding some comfort after a friend \u201ccame out\u201d to her as gender \u201cnon-binary.\u201d Grayson subsequently researched topics related to transgenderism. She said while going through puberty she feared that growing breasts and wider hips would mean people no longer viewed her as \u201cmasculine\u201d and as the \u201ctomboy\u201d that she always was.<\/p>\n<p>Grayson eventually told her mother, Holly, that she identified as male. Holly was initially taken aback because, she said, she had always assumed her daughter was simply a \u201cbutch lesbian.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, Holly found a clinic in Texas that counseled and affirmed children who expressed symptoms of gender dysphoria. She admitted her daughter.<\/p>\n<p>Grayson had already gone through the bulk of puberty, so was not given the option to ingest pills that would stunt her body\u2019s natural transition to womanhood (a common prescription among trans-affirming doctors). Instead, she was offered pharmaceuticals that would suppress her estrogen and increase her levels of testosterone. Her voice deepened and she grew facial hair, two consequences that <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/04\/21\/the-white-house-is-lying-to-you-about-the-irreversible-damage-chemical-castration-causes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">will be irreversible<\/a>, as conceded by Grayson and her mother.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut of course there\u2019s always electrolysis and laser,\u201d Holly says with a resigned laugh.<\/p>\n<p>Times reporter Azeen Ghorayshi then went into the concerns parents of gender dysphoric children have about experimenting with their kids\u2019 hormones, namely the permanent loss of bone density and potential infertility. Ghorayshi admitted that both are possibilities. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe just don\u2019t have a lot of data on what happens to bone density in [trans] people long term,\u201d she said. On fertility, she says, \u201cthe science here is really early,\u201d but that there are legitimate concerns that halting a person\u2019s natural development, only to artificially push it in the opposite direction, \u201cYou could interfere with the maturation of the eggs and sperm\u201d of that individual. \u201cThere\u2019s just very little in the way of long-term research,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>Most comically, if still depressing, Ghorayshi offered a simple remedy to that predicament: \u201cIf a kid knows that they want to have children down the road and wants to leave open the option to having their own biological kids, that permanent loss of fertility is a big deal, so these clinicians do coach the kids and their parents about what the options are if preserving fertility is important.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What a relief!<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m well past the age of puberty and even I don\u2019t know if I want children. How does a kid, all of 12 years old, and who may not even know how to have sex yet, know herself?<\/p>\n<p>The question that should be on everyone\u2019s minds is: Why can\u2019t any of this wait until a person is at least a legal adult and working with a brain that isn\u2019t preoccupied with doing cringe-worthy dances on Tik Tok?<\/p>\n<p>Ghorayshi attempted to address that issue at the tail end of part one.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTrans advocates and clinicians say all the time that doing nothing is also doing something,\u201d she says, \u201cbecause forcing a child to go through the puberty of a gender they don\u2019t identify with can also be harmful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Okay. Maybe? Is allowing a natural process harmful? In any event,  it couldn\u2019t possibly be any more harmful to let a child\u2019s body take its course than it is to irreversibly alter it, should that child change his mind about being transgender, which is not uncommon at all. <\/p>\n<p> Just last week the Washington Post ran <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/2022\/04\/11\/i-was-too-young-to-decide-about-transgender-surgery-at-nineteen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">an article<\/a> by a transgender person who is biologically male and regrets all the things he did to his body  to make it more like a woman before he was even the age of 20. \u201cI was still a virgin when I went in for surgery,\u201d wrote the author, Corinna Cohn. \u201cI mistakenly believed that this made my choice more serious and authentic. I chose an irreversible change before I\u2019d even begun to understand my sexuality. The surgeon deemed my operation a good outcome, but intercourse never became pleasurable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019re supposed to be comfortable with this. You\u2019re supposed to feel a sense of <em>compassion<\/em> for parents who go through the process of artificially, irreversibly altering their child\u2019s biological chemistry. You\u2019re supposed to be <em>accepting<\/em> of parents who let their kids make life changing medical choices to remove and mutilate their genitals.<\/p>\n<p>Texas Gov. Greg Abbott\u2019s administration has deemed it \u201cchild abuse\u201d for parents to go through these medical steps and procedures with their children, a move that has naturally set off all the people who think it\u2019s fine to tinker with a kid\u2019s hormones and reproductive organs. Is there any other term for it?<\/p>\n<p>That this stuff is happening should upset everyone. If it\u2019s not, there\u2019s nothing left to say about it.
