If a defendant&#8217;s child maintenance payments are set to terminate but the defendant&#8217;s obligation is not paid in full, the payments will continue until paid in full.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<p>The bill also required that no child maintenance payments be ordered if the surviving parent or guardian brings a civil suit against the defendant and obtains a judgment prior to the sentencing court ordering child maintenance payments.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<p>If a civil suit is brought forth after a sentence has been made ordering child maintenance payments, these payments will be offset by the amount awarded in the civil action.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<p>The bill had previously passed unanimously in the state\u2019s House before passing unanimously in the Senate on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<p>An amendment in the senate changed the bill\u2019s short name to &#8220;Ethan&#8217;s, Hailey&#8217;s, and Bentley&#8217;s Law,&#8221; referencing the three children of police officer Nicholas Galiger, who according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbs46.com\/2022\/04\/21\/bill-requiring-convicted-drunken-drivers-pay-child-support-if-parent-dies-passes-senate\/\">CBS 46<\/a> was killed in February of 2019 after Janet Hinds, who was driving while intoxicated, struck and killed the Chattanooga officer who had been inspecting a manhole cover that had water flowing from it when he was hit.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/article>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<div class=\"revcontent-slot\" data-v-4da339e1=\"\" data-v-1408f321=\"\">\n<p>Ads by revcontent<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<section class=\"contributions-container\" data-v-1408f321=\"\">\n<div class=\"partial contributions-epic\" data-v-37b8bc14=\"\" data-v-1408f321=\"\">\n<div class=\"inner\" data-v-37b8bc14=\"\">\n<h2 data-v-37b8bc14=\"\">Join and support independent free thinkers!<\/h2>\n<div class=\"words\" data-v-37b8bc14=\"\">\n<p data-v-37b8bc14=\"\">\n                We\u2019re independent and can\u2019t be cancelled.
