The photos have been circulating since 2015 during Russia\u2019s war in the Donbas region.<\/p>\n<p><span><strong>Fact Check:\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Russian President Vladimir Putin claimed Thursday that Russian forces had captured the city of Mariupol despite Ukrainian forces still reportedly holding ground in the city, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/middle-east\/leading-putin-ally-predicts-mariupol-victory-thursday-2022-04-20\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Reuters<\/a>. An image shared on Facebook claims to show a compilation of photos of a Russian soldier taking down a Ukrainian flag and planting a Soviet flag over the city.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Russian invaders are raising flags of the Soviet Union in Mariupol,\u201d reads the image\u2019s caption. \u201cDon\u2019t forget what Putin\u2019s main goal is: The restoration of the Soviet Union.\u201d Some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/OWSWeekTV\/photos\/a.839910849388184\/5167067453339147\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">iterations<\/a> of the post claim the pictures were taken at a steel plant in the city.<\/p>\n<p>The photos predate the current conflict in Ukraine. A reverse image search revealed they appeared in a March 2015 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ySKAzZdb84o&#038;t=61s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">YouTube video<\/a> from user VOXKOMM International. \u201cPrizrak Brigade, Communist militiaman raises the Soviet flag on freed Debaltsevo,\u201d reads the video\u2019s description.<\/p>\n[embedded content]\n<p>Debaltseve is located 180 kilometers northeast of Mariupol, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/dir\/Mariupol&#039;,+Donetsk+Oblast,+Ukraine\/Debal&#039;tseve,+Donetsk+Oblast,+Ukraine\/@47.2214512,32.5312296,9z\/data=!4m14!4m13!1m5!1m1!1s0x40e6e6a7bee7582b:0xa5d118300a75b5ce!2m2!1d37.543367!2d47.097133!1m5!1m1!1s0x40e06cbacd8d4763:0x451cc6338f9207c0!2m2!1d38.4062034!2d48.3340595!3e2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Google Maps<\/a>.
