After McCarthy <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GOPLeader\/status\/1517164322782433287\">denied<\/a> that he made the comments, the two reporters released an audio recording of the phone call to MSNBC\u2019s Rachel Maddow.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we were talking about the 25th Amendment resolution, and you asked if, you know, what happens if it gets there after he\u2019s gone, is there any chance, are you hearing, that he might resign? Is there any reason to think that might happen?\u201d Cheney asked McCarthy in the recording.<\/p>\n<p><strong>LISTEN:<\/strong><\/p>\n[embedded content]\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve a few discussions. My gut tells me no. I\u2019m seriously thinking of having that conversation with him tonight. I haven\u2019t talked to him in a couple of days. From what I know of him, I mean you guys know him too, do you think he\u2019d ever back away? But, what I think I\u2019m going to do, is I\u2019m going to call him. This is what I think, we know it\u2019ll pass the House,\u201d McCarthy says in response.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think there\u2019s a chance it\u2019ll pass the Senate, even when he is gone. And I think there\u2019s a lot of different ramifications for that,\u201d he continues. \u201cI do not want to get into any conversation about Pence pardoning. Again, the only discussion I would have with him is that, I think this will pass. And it will be my recommendation you should resign. I mean, that would be my take. But I don\u2019t think he would take it. But I don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for Cheney, who has since been <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/05\/12\/liz-cheney-ousted-house-republican-leadership-role\/\">removed<\/a> from her leadership position, denied that she leaked the recording to the reporters. <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/07\/01\/nancy-pelosi-liz-cheney-jan-6-committee\/\"><strong>(RELATED: Nancy Pelosi Taps Liz Cheney To Serve On Jan. 6 Committee)<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cRep. Cheney did not record or leak the tape and does not know how the reporters got it,\u201d the spokesperson <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/04\/22\/politics\/kevin-mccarthy-audio-trump-resign\/index.html\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Select Committee investigating the Jan. 6 Capitol riot has <a href=\"https:\/\/january6th.house.gov\/news\/press-releases\/select-committee-seeks-information-minority-leader-mccarthy-0\">asked<\/a> McCarthy to sit for an interview, although it is not expected to issue a subpoena compelling his testimony. Cheney and Illinois Rep. Adam Kinzinger are the only Republicans on the committee. Both were <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/07\/26\/kevin-mccarthy-pelosi-cheney-kinzinger-jan-6-committee-congress\/\">appointed<\/a> to it by Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi.<\/p>\n<p>McCarthy is likely to mount a run for Speaker of the House if Republicans take back the lower chamber in the November midterms.
