Religious freedom experts confirmed students and staff are welcome to read and carry the Bible in schools.<\/p>\n<p><span><strong>Fact Check:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Facebook post, which has garnered over 2,200 likes, claims the Holy Bible is not allowed in schools but is \u201cencouraged\u201d in prison. \u201cIf kids were allowed to read it at school, they may not end up in prison,\u201d reads text included in the post.<\/p>\n<p>Bibles are typically available in prisons. State and federal correctional institutions must provide inmates with the right to freely practice their religion in accordance with the First Amendment, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scranton.edu\/faculty\/dammer\/ency-religion.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the University of Scranton<\/a>.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bibletruthpublishers.com\/free-bible\/c815\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Several<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prisonfellowship.org\/resources\/training-resources\/in-prison\/ministry-basics\/bibles-for-prisoners\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">organizations<\/a> provide free Bibles to prisoners in the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>However, the post\u2019s claim about Bibles in schools is incorrect. Reading and carrying a Bible is not banned in school. The 1963 Supreme Court case <a href=\"http:\/\/www.digitalhistory.uh.edu\/disp_textbook.cfm?smtID=3&#038;psid=4087\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Abington v. Schempp<\/a> deemed mandatory readings from the Bible in public school as unconstitutional but did not ban the book outright.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aclu.org\/other\/statement-bible-public-schools-first-amendment-guide\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">American Civil Liberties Union<\/a> (ACLU) states the Bible may be taught in public schools so long as it is done in a way that advances particular religious beliefs. In other words, it must be done for purely educational reasons. Students are free to carry and read the Bible in school, according to religious freedom experts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe post is categorically false,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.freedomforum.org\/author\/dcallaway\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">David Callaway<\/a>, a religious freedom specialist at the Freedom Forum, in an email to Check Your Fact.\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2020\/07\/22\/fact-check-minnesota-middle-school-threw-away-books-cleaned\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Viral Image Claims A Minnesota Middle School Discarded Books Because They \u2018Cannot Be Cleaned\u2019)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cStudents are allowed to bring Bibles (or other scriptures) to school,\u201d he continued. \u201cThey may take them out and read them at any time that it would be appropriate to read any other book brought from home \u2013 essentially, as long as it is not causing a disruption or otherwise interfering with the learning process. Many schools even have Bible elective courses that actually teach about the Bible and use it as a primary text during instruction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/firstliberty.org\/team\/jeremy-dys\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jeremy Dys<\/a>, special counsel for litigation and communications for First Liberty Institute, agreed with this conclusion. \u201cStudents are not only allowed to bring their Bible to school,\u201d he told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/faith-values\/bible-school-day-students-legal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fox News<\/a>. \u201cThey\u2019re certainly allowed to read it during free time, in between classes, and even reference the Bible within their assignments and class discussions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hundreds of thousands of Christian students participated in last year\u2019s \u201cBring Your Bible to School Day,\u201d an annual nationwide event organized by the group <a href=\"https:\/\/www.focusonthefamily.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Focus on the Family<\/a>, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.christianpost.com\/news\/students-nationwide-take-part-in-bring-your-bible-to-school-day.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Christian Post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Check Your Fact has reached out to the Department of Education and will update this piece if a comment is received.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A post shared on Facebook over 960 times claims the Bible is banned in schools but encouraged in prison.Verdict: Misleading Bibles are permitted in both prisons and public schools.
