At the time of the initial reporting, the reason for Haskins walking on the interstate was unknown. On Wednesday, TMZ reported that Haskins\u2019 wife had called 911 the morning of his death, telling the dispatcher that Haskins had called her after running out of gas on the interstate.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cHe said he was going to call me back after he finished putting the gas in,\u201d <\/span><span>Kalabrya Haskins <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tmz.com\/2022\/04\/20\/dwayne-haskins-911-audio-wife-says-he-was-walking-on-highway-for-gas\/?adid=social-twa\"><span>told<\/span><\/a><span> the 911 dispatcher<\/span><span>. <\/span><span>Kalabrya called 911 after Haskins did not call her back.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI kept calling and kept calling,\u201d Kalabyra <\/span><span>told<\/span><span> the dispatch officer. \u201cHe wasn\u2019t answering. Eventually, after 10 minutes of calling the phone, eventually it cut off. It\u2019s not working now. I had his location. I just want somebody to go in the area and see if his car is there and if he\u2019s OK and if anything happened to him.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>On the call, the dispatch officer informed <\/span><span>Kalabrya that there was an \u201cincident on the highway.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI don\u2019t want you to panic, but I\u2019m going to be honest with you,\u201d the dispatcher <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tmz.com\/2022\/04\/20\/dwayne-haskins-911-audio-wife-says-he-was-walking-on-highway-for-gas\/?adid=social-twa\"><span>said<\/span><\/a><span>. \u201cWe do have an incident on the highway \u2014 but I can\u2019t confirm if that\u2019s your husband or not.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Haskins died from his injuries at the scene of the accident. Also on Wednesday, TMZ <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tmz.com\/2022\/04\/20\/dwayne-haskins-struck-by-two-vehicles-in-fatal-crash-investigators-say\/\">reported<\/a> that Haskins was actually struck by two vehicles on the night of his death.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Haskins was drafted by the now-Washington Commanders in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft after a standout 2018 season at Ohio State. He struggled in his first two NFL seasons, starting just 13 games for Washington. Haskins signed with the Steelers prior to the 2021 season.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI am devastated and at a loss for words with the unfortunate passing of Dwayne Haskins,\u201d Pittsburgh head coach Mike Tomlin <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/steelers\/status\/1512816701485821960?s=20&#038;t=j1xFjNrjy7YhPOKhh1z2TA\"><span>said<\/span><\/a><span> in a statement. \u201cHe quickly became part of our Steelers family upon his arrival in Pittsburgh and was one of our hardest workers, both on the field and in our community. Dwayne was a great teammate, but even more so a tremendous friend to so many. I am truly heartbroken.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cOur thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Kalabrya, and his entire family during this difficult time,\u201d the statement continued.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Ohio State head coach Ryan Day, who coached Haskins in college, put out a statement on Twitter following the news.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe loss of Dwayne is beyond tragic and extremely difficult to process,\u201d Day <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ryandaytime\/status\/1512842115268624393?s=20&#038;t=7hCB5XebUPpJbAWSqPD7gw\"><span>said<\/span><\/a><span>. \u201cFor those who knew him closely, he was much more than a great football player. He had a giant heart, old soul and an infectious smile.
