She reportedly hid in a basement when they came to her family\u2019s home. They took her mother, but Obiedkova stayed hidden.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>When Nazis executed thousands of Jews in the city in October of 1941, Obiedkova\u2019s mother and her mother\u2019s entire family were among the victims. Her father escaped execution since he was not Jewish. Obiedkova was eventually detained by the Nazis, but friends convinced them that she was a Greek, and her father placed her in a hospital where she remained until the Nazis were driven out of Mariupol.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cObiedkova gave a full account of her life and Holocaust experience to the USC Shoah Foundation in 1998,\u201d Chabad.org reported. However, the copy of the interview Obiedkova\u2019s daughter held onto perished along with their home. \u201cWe had a VHS tape of her interview at home,\u201d Larissa said.<\/span> <span>\u201cBut that\u2019s all burned together with our home.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Ukrainian officials have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/mariupol-mayor-calls-for-complete-evacuation-of-ukrainian-city-claims-5000-have-died\"><span>said<\/span><\/a><span> that at least 5,000 citizens of Mariupol have died since the Russians invaded in late February, and Rabbi Cohen called the city \u201ca cemetery.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>On March 16, officials reported that 300 people died from a Russian strike on a theater being used as a bomb shelter, even though the word \u201cchildren\u201d had been spelled out in large Russian letters outside.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>When violence intensified in the city in March, Obiedkova moved with some of her family into the basement of a heating supply store, according to Chabad.org. \u201cThere was no water, no electricity, no heat\u2014and it was unbearably cold,\u201d Larissa said of the make-shift shelter. \u201c[T]here was nothing we could do for her.
