The legislation\u2019s reference to the word has sparked pro-life anxieties that the bill will be used to legalize infanticide.<\/p>\n<p>California Family Council President Jonathan Keller <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sacbee.com\/news\/politics-government\/capitol-alert\/article260528472.html\">praised<\/a> Californians who traveled from all over the state this week to \u201ctell legislators decriminalizing infanticide is barbaric and indefensible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA political culture that justifies killing millions of children in the womb is now declaring open season on unwanted newborns,\u201d he said. \u201cEvery Californian must oppose this heinous bill.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Live Action President Lila Rose worried to The Daily Wire that \u201ccriminals who kill children up to four weeks old may be able to operate with impunity in California,\u201d calling AB 2223 \u201cpotentially the most destructive pro-abortion bill in the nation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe bill also gives a mother the right to sue any law enforcement agency for investigating or threatening to investigate her \u2018pregnancy outcome\u2019 including the perinatal death of her child,\u201d she said. \u201cThat means if you find a dead infant in a dumpster, law enforcement is expected not to look into the matter if they think the child died after a failed abortion or from any \u2018pregnancy-related cause.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rose also expressed fears that the bill would leave babies born alive through botched abortion open to \u201cmurder or killing by neglect.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>AB 2223 would delete the requirement that the coroner\u00a0determine the cause of \u201cviolent, sudden, or unusual deaths\u201d related to \u201cself-induced or criminal abortion.\u201d It would also delete the requirement that an \u201cunattended fetal death be handled as a death without medical attendance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe bill would prohibit using the coroner\u2019s statements on the certificate of fetal death to establish, bring, or support a criminal prosecution or civil cause of damages against any person,\u201d the legislation said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf a coroner thinks that the circumstances of a fetal death were suspicious or even criminal, or that the mother was being coerced, that information could not be used by law enforcement to investigate the suspected crime,\u201d Rose said. \u201cCriminals will walk free because of this trojan horse supposedly meant to protect \u2018reproductive freedom.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But pro-abortion advocates insist that the legislation merely seeks to protect women, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sacbee.com\/news\/politics-government\/capitol-alert\/article260528472.html\">progressive outlets<\/a> argue that neither the bill\u2019s language nor the lawmaker\u2019s intent supports pro-life allegations that the bill would decriminalize infanticide.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">\u201cInvestigation and prosecution for ending a Democratic assemblywoman, <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/health-crime-california-legislature-731ee9f7bc8d297a3696fff4dd9bc12e\">insisted<\/a> that the bill \u201cwould not prevent police from investigating fetal deaths that occurred as a result of a crime committed against a pregnant person, or from investigating infant deaths that occurred as a result of an act or omission that took place after delivery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-69 Component-p-0-2-60\">\u201cIn California today, we have women who are being prosecuted for having miscarriages, and that is not OK,\u201d Wicks said. \u201cWe have to send a message to the rest of this country that you cannot be criminalized for pregnancy-related losses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A spokeswoman for Wicks,\u00a0Erin Ivie, <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/russia-ukraine-covid-technology-science-entertainment-3ecce7bfdcc4ae637e0eb7e74254bd1d\">told The Associated Press<\/a> that \u201cthe bill is specific to pregnancy and pregnancy-related outcomes, and does not decriminalize the \u2018murder of babies\u2019 in the weeks after birth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evie added that perinatal is meant to mean the death of a baby caused by complications in the pregnancy, and that to clarify the term\u2019s meaning, Wicks added an amendment to the original legislation that changed the wording to\u00a0\u201cperinatal death due to a pregnancy-related cause.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnti-abortion activists are peddling an absurd and disingenuous argument that this bill is about killing newborns when ironically, the part of the bill they\u2019re pointing to is about protecting and supporting parents experiencing the grief of pregnancy loss,\u201d Wicks said, according to the AP.<\/p>\n<p>But Katie Glenn, Government Affairs Counsel at the pro-life organization Americans United for Life, warned The Daily Wire that \u201cthe amendment added to AB 2223 does not change the fact that a child could be legally killed after birth under this bill.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe is wrong,\u201d Glenn said of Wick\u2019s assertion that the bill is not about infanticide.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing about the minor changes to the bill changes the fact that it permits the intentional death of a newborn for an undefined amount of time,\u201d Glenn said. \u201cAND it still prevents law enforcement from investigating if they find a dead baby or risk being sued for harassment of the mother and whoever aids her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Glenn noted that postpartum depression is one obvious \u201cpregnancy-related cause,\u201d but emphasized that with the phrase undefined, \u201cit could mean just about anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is no medical definition of \u2018perinatal\u2019 that stops at birth, so as long as that word is included in the bill, a newborn can be legally killed and the police cannot investigate that death without opening themselves up to civil liability,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Daily Wire
