The bill was never intended to allow child marriage, according to its sponsors.<\/p>\n<p><span><strong>Fact Check:\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Republican Tennessee State Rep. Tom Leatherwood recently introduced a bill that would recognize common-law marriages in the state, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/us-supreme-court-tennessee-marriage-lifestyle-couples-0cd64047dbf15682f7f3ddf2d06d6a89\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Associated Press<\/a>. The new designation, however, would only be available for heterosexual couples, leading some to characterize the bill as \u201canti-LGBTQ,\u201d the outlet reported.<\/p>\n<p>An image shared on Facebook claims the bill also has another objective.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\u201cTennessee Republicans are advancing a \u2018marry little kids\u2019 bill that will allow them to marry children of any age,\u201d reads the image\u2019s text. \u201cWhy is the Republican Party trying to legalize pedophilia?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This claim is misleading. While the bill did not have an age requirement when it was first introduced in March, an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.capitol.tn.gov\/Bills\/112\/Amend\/SA0868.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">amendment<\/a> was added April 6 to clarify the common-law marriage designation would only be available to heterosexual couples who have reached the \u201cage of majority,\u201d according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennessean.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2022\/04\/06\/tennessee-marriage-bill-no-age-limit-sparks-backlash-over-child-bride-concerns\/9479778002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Tennessean<\/a>.
