While culture critics in the liberal media received the series warmly\u2014even as one <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-reviews\/our-great-national-parks-review-1235128431\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">admitted<\/a>, &#8220;I can&#8217;t say that I learned a tremendous amount&#8221;\u2014investors were less convinced.<\/p>\n<p>In a stunning show of pessimism in the company&#8217;s situation, Netflix&#8217;s stock imploded on Tuesday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/04\/20\/netflix-plunges-trading-subscriber-loss.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">plunging<\/a> 37 percent by Wednesday morning. The collapse was driven by Netflix&#8217;s Tuesday announcement that it lost subscribers last quarter for the first time in more than a decade. The service is scrambling to remedy its poor subscriber numbers, announcing last month that it plans to start charging customers for sharing their accounts with others.<\/p>\n<p>The company&#8217;s decline is a reflection of the failure of its costly partnership with the former president. Netflix in 2018 entered into a multi-year agreement with Obama and his wife Michelle to produce films and series. It&#8217;s unclear exactly how much cash the company burned to hire the Obamas, but considering that Netflix\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/obama-netflix-deal-worth-trump-films-tv-shows-1459571\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">paid<\/a> the creator of\u00a0<em>Glee\u00a0<\/em>$300 million for a five-year deal, the amount was likely exorbitant.<\/p>\n<p>Through that deal, the Obamas brought to Netflix a documentary called\u00a0<em>American Factory<\/em>,\u00a0about an Ohio auto factory bought out by a Chinese state-backed company. While the film purported to shed light on a clash of cultures and the struggles of the American working class, it instead <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/culture\/review-american-factory\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">served as<\/a> &#8220;a platform for Communist oligarchs to propagandize.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>If Communist propaganda wasn&#8217;t unpalatable enough for viewers, the Obamas are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eater.com\/2019\/4\/30\/18524399\/barack-michelle-obama-netflix-kids-show-listen-to-your-vegetables-and-eat-your-parents\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reportedly<\/a> working to bring to Netflix a kids show called\u00a0<em>Listen to Your Vegetables &#038; Eat Your Parents<\/em>, a revival of Michelle Obama&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/issues\/study-veggie-consumption-significantly-down-since-michelle-os-lunch-standards\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">failed<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/culture\/pennsylvania-school-sees-improvement-dropping-michelle-obama-lunch-program\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">crusade<\/a>\u00a0to get kids to eat healthier.<\/p>\n<p>In Barack Obama&#8217;s latest series, he takes viewers on a tour of the planet&#8217;s greatest national parks and their wildlife, from the sea otters of California&#8217;s Monterey Bay to the lions of his native country, on Kenya&#8217;s Yatta Plateau.<\/p>\n<p>Some critics of Netflix argue that the company&#8217;s programming across the board, not just the content the Obamas brought to the site, is to blame for the company&#8217;s hemorrhaging of subscribers. Tesla CEO Elon Musk <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1516600269899026432?s=20&#038;t=u5vrFhID2yww719bsPxu2Q\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>\u00a0Tuesday that the &#8220;woke mind virus&#8221; has made Netflix &#8220;unwatchable.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>That critique is borne out by Netflix&#8217;s release this week of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=qi3-rN60JE0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>He&#8217;s Expecting<\/em><\/a>, a Japanese film about a &#8220;successful cisgender man&#8221; forced &#8220;to confront social inequities he&#8217;d never considered before&#8221; when he becomes pregnant.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Just days after a nature documentary hosted by former president Barack Obama launched on Netflix, the streaming company is in shambles, with its shares in freefall.
